KNEU 1250Hearts were full and pocketbooks open at the 2017 Enchanted Forest Auction held Thursday, November 16th at the Crossroads Community Center in Roosevelt. The event, hosted by the Roosevelt Rotary Club and Duchesne County Chamber of Commerce, welcomed over 250 people.
New data is out from the Department of Workforce Services showing that Utah’s economy remains strong. The nonfarm payroll employment for October 2017 grew by an estimated 2.7 percent, adding 39,400 jobs to the economy since October 2016, bringing employment levels in the state to 1,492,600. The state unemployment continues to slowly drop with October’s rate landing at 3.3 percent, down one-tenth of a percent from September. National unemployment also decreased by one-tenth of a percent to 4.1 percent. “Employment trends in Utah have moderated slightly but continue to show notable expansion,” shares DWS Chief Economist Carrie Mayne. “Unemployment remains low, indicating that opportunities for employment are meeting the needs of job seekers.” Updated unemployment rates by county will be released this week.
The Ute Tribe has deep roots in the Rocky Mountain region and is among several tribes invited to offer input on a historical makeover for a national park in Colorado. The University of Colorado Public Outreach and Community Engagement program announced this week that Rocky Mountain National Park is exploring how to better represent indigenous histories into the park exhibits and information shared.
Scammers rarely stick to one area and the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office is warning of two new scams in local circulation for folks to be aware of throughout the region. One scam involves a bogus ‘eviction notice’ that is being emailed and purports to be from the ‘Rock Springs Sheriff’s Office.’ Within the email is an attachment for more information on the phony eviction.
Christmas Tree tags are now on sale for Ashley National Forest and the U.S. Forest Service is offering a free permit for 4th grade Every Kid in a Park pass holders. Regular Christmas tree permits are available at any of the forest vendors in the Basin but those wanting the free permit for 4th grade pass holders will need to visit any of the Ashley National Forest offices during business hours. While there is construction at the Vernal offices on 355 North Vernal Avenue, operations are still being held on site in another building so visitors need to park on the North side of the building. Utah’s 1st congressional district which includes northeastern Utah is set to benefit from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed by the U.S. House of Representatives this week. According to Representative Rob Bishop, 71,033 taxpayers in the 1st District claim the child tax credit which will now be increased from $1,000 dollars per child to $1,600 dollars per child.
Two Uintah High students have been commended for high test scores. Emily Semadeni and Heidi Daniel were both recently recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. for their performance on the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Heidi and Emily were presented with their awards at a school assembly this year.
Craig Police Department is asking the public to be on the lookout for a fugitive. 20-year-old Ezequiel Chavez is wanted on failure to appear in court for a traffic incident and failure to appear in court on a fraud charge.
The Uintah High School FFA Agronomy Team placed first at the State FFA Career Development Event which means the crew has earned the right to compete at nationals. Superintendent Mark Dockins recognized the students during this month’s school board meeting.
Making good on his promise to make restitution payments, a Vernal man’s prison sentence for defrauding his employer was suspended during sentencing in 8th District Court. According to court documents, 42-year-old Cortney Pierce received $65,000 dollars from his employer in 2014 with the promise that the money would be used to develop a trucking app that he promised would make huge profits.
A Duchesne County nurse charged with negligent homicide made her initial appearance in 8th District Court on Wednesday. 50-year-old Jana Clyde was charged in September by the State of Utah Attorney General with Negligent Homicide, a class A Misdemeanor, in the death of Madison Jensen in the Duchesne County Jail on December 1st, 2016.
The National Defense Authorization Act for 2018 is increasing support for aircraft at Utah’s Hill Air Force Base, thanks in large part to Representative Rob Bishop’s push to rebuild national defense. “This year’s NDAA finally recognizes that the 4 budget cuts and 2 manpower cuts to our military during the Obama years have harmed our military readiness,” shares Bishop.
