Uintah High Student Represents Utah as a U.S. Presidential Scholar

A Uintah High School student is among a prestigious group who will be representing Utah in a national contest. Jared Connelly is one of just five students in the state to be selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education. “Jared will now enter the national contest,” shares Uintah School District. “If he does well there, he will be awarded with an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., where he will receive his medallion. Students are nominated based on: academic rigor, technical competence, ‘employability’ skills, and ingenuity, creativity and problem-solving ability.

Ute Indian Tribe Successfully Has Lands Removed From Proposed Wilderness Act

The Ute Indian Tribe issued a press release dated January 21st sharing that over the past year, the Ute Tribe Business Committee has been working with Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois and Congressman Alan Lowenthal of California “to protect the Tribe’s Uncompahgre Reservation lands.” The press release states that Senator Durbin and Congressman Lowenthal are the sponsors of the ‘America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act’ and when the Ute Tribe Business Committee learned that some of the land in Utah that would be federally protected under the Act “overlapped with the Tribe’s Reservation, the Business Committee took action to protect the Tribe’s authority over its Reservation lands…

Premiere of Highline Documentary Premieres Friday in Vernal

The Unita Highline Trail is getting some major attention this weekend with the release of a new documentary focused on this local adventure destination. This trail is 104 miles east to west. It crosses eight named passes that exceed 11,200 feet with one being King’s Peak, the highest point in Utah. Altogether there is 16,700 feet of elevation gained, passing through forests, subalpine meadows, alpine tundra, rock fields, and snow fields with nothing but occasional posts or signs to mark the way. Such is the background for the newest documentary Highline.

Application Period for Big Game Hunt Opens Soon

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources would like to remind hunters that are interested in Utah’s big game hunts that the application process will be opening soon. The application period opens on Thursday, January 30th and will go until 11pm on Thursday, March 5th. Some of the species that are considered big game include Bighorn sheep (both desert and Rocky Mountain), bison, elk, moose, mountain goat, mule deer and pronghorn. There are some new hunts this year for bighorn sheep, bison, deer and pronghorn.

Winterfest Day of Dance and BYU’s Ballroom Dance Company

Winterfest activities are getting ready to dance the winter blues away with a Day of Dance. The day will start with dancing being taught on Saturday, January 25th at the Crossroads Community Center from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Instructors will be from local dance studios and the BYU Ballroom Dance company. There will be group activities, special age-based workshops, and snacks for those 3 to 18 years of age. All this fun for a $10 dollars admission (cash only).

USU Uintah Basin is doing something special to support, celebrate, and honor the women of the Uintah Basin with their Year of the Woman campaign. Each month will highlight women in categories ranging from Women’s Suffrage to Wellness & Nutrition. The category for January is Arts & Culture and the woman to be highlighted for week 2 is McKenna Christiansen. McKenna was nominated by her husband Mike Christiansen who shares that McKenna is a positive of example of proactive leadership and womanhood to local young women.

Sleep plays a major part in our health. Struggling to find healthy sleep habits and patterns might seem like the norm but should not be taken lightly. The sleep specialist with Ashley Regional Medical Center, Shelly Sorenesen, shares that “if you’ve tried different tactics and are still having trouble sleeping, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder. Left untreated, sleep disorders can be very damaging to a person’s overall health.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the four most common sleep disorders in the U.S. are insomnia, narcolepsy, Restless Leg Syndrome and sleep apnea.

Federal Judge Issues Decision and Order in Case of Madison Jensen Death

U.S. District Court Judge Dale A. Kimball issued a Memorandum Decision And Order on Tuesday in the case of the Estate of Madison Jody Jensen versus Duchesne County and other defendants. 21-year-old Madison Jensen was booked into Duchesne County Jail on November 27th, 2016 for internal possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Four days later at 1:28pm on December 1st, Madison was found deceased in her cell. The next day on December 2nd, the Utah Medical Examiner determined the immediate cause of death to be cardiac arrhythmia from dehydration due to opiate withdrawal.

Duchesne County School District Hosting Two Lectures to Help Kids

The Duchesne County School District takes the mental health of the kids they serve very seriously. To help both parents and children navigate the challenges of stress and mental achievement they have invited Doctor Christy Kane to share her 20 plus years of clinical experience and scientific research. Dr. Kane holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, a masters in mental health counseling, and a bachelor's degree in psychology. She will first be at Altamont High School on Wednesday, January 22nd from 6 to 7:30pm sharing how stress impacts the brain.

Uintah County Library Featuring Documentary ‘Into the Cold’

Sebastian Copeland was named one of the world’s top 25 adventurers in the last 25 years by Men’s Journal. He has led numerous expeditions into polar regions to film and photograph endangered environments. His documentary, Into the Cold, is the story of how he and his partner Keith Heger trained for and then embarked on a two-month expedition across the North Pole. They covered over 400 miles on foot through minus fifty degree weather. The film was selected for the Tribeca Film Festival in 2010 and in 2011 was part of the Environmental Film Fest, Victoria Film Fest, and the Blue Planet Film Fest.

UBAOG Will Be Conducting The 2020 Homelessness Count For The Basin

Homelessness is an issue that is on the rise throughout the nation. Last year’s homelessness count showed that Utah’s homelessness was stable. This was both good news and bad news. Good in that even though Utah was seeing rising housing costs there wasn't a dramatic increase in the homelessness population. Bad for the fact that millions was spent into efforts to reduce homelessness.
