KNEU 1250Most people will never know what it is really like to serve their country as a soldier but a unique way to gain some additional appreciation for those who serve is taking place this Saturday. The 5th Annual UBTech Ruck Run offers the experience to run while packing a ruck. “A ‘RUCK’ is what a veteran carries when serving our country,” shares UBTech.
Do you have an interest in art, storytelling or worldbuilding? If so, then you’d be interested to know that the Uintah County Library will be holding its first meeting of the Graphic Storytelling Club and it’s taking place today! This club will be the perfect place for those that have an interest in comic books, art, visual storytelling and in-depth worldbuilding. Members will be asked to identify goals for improvement, areas of interest to learn more of and a willingness to collaborate creatively in groups.
The Roosevelt Animal Shelter had an influx of dogs recently after an unoccupied home was discovered to have over 20 unattended dogs in the home and surrounding property. “Neighbors reported that a vacant home at 488 East 650 North appeared to have several dogs unattended inside,” shares Roosevelt Police Chief Rick Harrison. “Officers investigated and found several dogs had gotten out of the house and were loose on the property.
The Old Fort community fishing ponds are officially closed to the public. “They capped over with layers of ice and are currently unsafe for the public,” shares DWR Conservation Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby. The fishing ponds have been a popular stop since their opening. The DWR and local law enforcement used the location to host their very first ‘Badges & Bobbers’ event last June where local officers fished with local special needs adults and children. The ponds will reopen again in the spring of 2020 when the ice has thawed and is again safe.
Uintah County has announced that demolition of the existing White River Bridge on Seep Ridge Road is scheduled for this month. The work will begin November 18th and construction of a new bridge is expected to be complete by March 23rd, 2020. “During the demolition and construction, a detour route will be in place from Chapita Grove Road to Glen Bench Road to Seep Ridge Road,” shares Uintah County. “The detour route will have signs posted.
There is such a wide variety of plants and wildlife in Dinosaur National Monument. There is so much to see that often times visitors need to find resources to help identify everything they encounter. Dinosaur National Monument has the perfect resource for those needs. The Integrated Resource Management Applications (or IRMA) is a website that lists the species of plants and animals that can be found in the different National Parks
The preliminary results for the 2019 election are in. The Roosevelt City Council preliminary results show that there were 860 total ballots counted with Don Busenbark receiving 484 votes, Cody Aland receiving 445 votes, Vince Reiley receiving 393 votes, Aaron Weight receiving 377 votes, Rebecca Pittman receiving 367 votes, and Joe Burdick receiving 311 votes. “Please note that these numbers will not be finalized until the canvas at Roosevelt City Council meeting on Tuesday, November 19th,” explains Roosevelt Deputy Recorder LeeNichole Marett. “Some mail-in ballots will likely continue to arrive over the next few days, and some numbers may change slightly. Final results will be released after the canvas, but we do expect that the final numbers will match this preliminary count relatively closely.”
The preliminary results for the 2019 election in Uintah County show that Proposition 4 did not pass. There were 2,998 votes ‘FOR The School District Voted Local Levy Tax’ and 3,564 votes ‘AGAINST The School District Voted Local Levy Tax”; that’s 45.69 percent FOR and 54.31 percent AGAINST Proposition 4. Preliminary results for the Ashley Valley Water and Sewer Improvement District Board shows Dean A. Baker with 22.41 percent of the vote, Max Haslem with 21.20 percent, Robert K. Jolley with 20.28 percent, David L. Hatch with 18.14 percent, and Mike Davis with 17.98 percent of the vote. There were 6,594 ballots cast in Uintah County for a total voter turnout of 47.81 percent. Clerk/Auditor Mike Wilkins reports that that is double the usual turnout for a municipal general election.
Vernal’s own Sidney Smith and his wife Lori had quite the welcome home last night complete with lights, sirens, a street lined with friends and neighbors cheering with signs, and an unexpected visit from the Mayor. The couple had made the long trip back from Florida where Sidney completed a full Ironman competition over the weekend which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run. Just four years ago, Sidney lay in a hospital bed after his most recent surgery following a lifetime of procedures and surgeries related to a disease he was born with that causes foot deformities and muscle wasting. He was now officially a double amputee and while fear and depression were present at that point, he watched from his hospital bed the stories of Ironman competitors, including an amputee.
It’s Election Day! For Roosevelt City residents, yesterday was the last day to submit ballots by mail. Today ballots need to be delivered to the Roosevelt City Office building by 8:00pm. For those that did not receive a ballot by mail, a provisional ballot can be filled out at the Roosevelt City building before 8:00pm. In Uintah County, ballots can be delivered to the Uintah County building today before 8:00 pm. If you did not get registered to vote in time, you can register and vote today at the County building.
A formal charge was filed in 8th District Court on Monday against the woman accused of stealing money from the Uintah & Daggett Counties Children’s Justice Center. 41-year-old Michelle Lyn Coon was arrested Wednesday and booked into Uintah County Jail. Coon served as the Treasurer for the ‘Friends of Uintah & Daggett Counties Children’s Justice Center’ where she is believed to have stolen over $145,000 dollars over a period of around 10 years and for which she is now formally charged with second degree felony Theft in 8th District Court.
One of Utah’s best attended events, the Holly Fair, celebrated 40 years over the weekend with a great turnout. “The 2019 Holly Fair was definitely one for the books with five locations completely full and attendance up by at least 10 percent,” shares Duchesne County Commissioner Irene Hansen. “A nice assortment of Holly Fair booths meant that people were able to find unique treasures and one of a kind items. It was a 40 year anniversary for the Holly Fair and it was a perfect outcome,” says Hansen.
