KNEU 1250Local leaders are exploring a unique economic development idea that, while still in its infancy, is gaining attention and support as a creative solution for workforce imbalance statewide. Uintah County Commissioner Bart Haslem has developed the concept being called Balance Utah which aims to make a reasonable work commute possible between Uintah County and the Wasatch Front.
Even though the snow is melting, the Uintah Basin is not out of the woods when it comes to high ozone. Director of the USU Bingham Research Center Dr. Seth Lyman announced Thursday that there is a reasonable likelihood that the Uinta Basin will exceed the EPA standard over the weekend and possibly into next week.
A talented local composer is gaining much deserved attention for her latest compositions. In February, composer Jill Boyd travelled to Phoenix where she was able to hear the world premier of “Voyager”, her 3rd orchestra piece performed by the West Valley Cadet Strings. For three consecutive years, Jill has been commissioned to write a piece for the group and during her visit was formally invited to create pieces for the group’s spring concerts each year.
“The world of government contracting can be daunting,” shares the Utah Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC). In order to make it less so, they are offering free training in conjunction with the Small Business Association.
A bill with potential for significant economic benefits for the Uintah Basin has been approved by the Utah House and Senate and is headed to Governor Herbert’s desk. HB433 ‘Inland Port Amendments’ modifies provisions of the Utah Inland Port Authority to allow for areas outside the jurisdictional land of the port in Salt Lake. The bill’s sponsor, Representative Francis Gibson, has explained that branching out to rural areas will maximize the export potential and benefits to all areas of the state, including opportunities for the oil and gas industry in the Uintah Basin.
While many locals have heard that Uintah County Sheriff’s Office is the first in the State of Utah to supply Naloxone rescue kits to inmates upon release, some are asking why. In a press conference last month, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes and leaders with the Utah Naloxone organization offered their explanation, saying the experimental program gives people a fighting chance at redemption.
The wildlife of Utah is one of the most precious commodities of the state. The Division of Wildlife Resources is looking for members of the community to help manage this commodity. DWR needs individuals to complete the five Regional Advisory Councils (RAC). Each RAC has six special interest members: hunters, anglers and trappers; those who don’t hunt or fish; ranchers and farmers; locally-elected public officials; federal land-management agencies; and the rest of the public at large.
The Craig City Council met on Monday, March 11th and declared Craig a “sanctuary city”, according to the Craig Press. After the Moffat County Commissioners declared a similar stance, the city council postponed its agenda to discuss the sanctuary city resolution.
President Trump signed S. 47, a lands package significant to the Uintah Basin, into law on Tuesday. As the ranking member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, Utah’s Representative Rob Bishop released a statement on this achievement that was years in the making. “Local voices impacted by public lands throughout our country have been heard,” shared Bishop.
The Friends of Buckskin Hills Shooting Complex are hosting the Vernal Gun and Knife Show this weekend. This event is a TRUE gun and knife show meaning that if a product is not a related item it will not be allowed in the show. All federal, state and local firearm ordinances and laws must be obeyed.
This week is NGWA’s National Groundwater Awareness Week and the TriCounty Health Department wants to invite the Basin to get involved. Since water is such an everyday part of our life we often don’t think about it. Only 1 percent of the water on Earth is useable with 99 percent of that being groundwater. Not only that but 44 percent of the United States population depends on groundwater as its drinking supply. With such a dependence on groundwater and not much thought put into it, the NGWA has set the theme for the week to be THINK. Think big, in that the farmers rely on the groundwater to provide us with the food that we eat. Think small to how much water can be saved from fixing the leaky faucet. Take the time to think about excessive water use, for instance the times we leave the water running while we brush our teeth.Think safety by having your well inspected yearly to protect your water system. An inmate escaped from a correctional facility in Colorado is still missing, according to Monday’s last report, and citizens throughout the region are encouraged to be on the lookout. Adam Loehr escaped from the Delta Correctional Facility in Delta, Colorado on Saturday and the public has been asked to not approach him and call 911 immediately if he is seen.
