‘Caring For Coy’ Support Group Available For Those Who Have Lost An Infant

Our hearts go out to those in our community who are suffering because of the loss of an infant. It is unimaginable to understand and words fall short in expressing the sorrow. One great local resource is the Caring for Coy Support Group for parents, grandparents siblings and anyone else dealing with such a loss. They meet monthly and are there to “aid in your healing, bring hope to your future and honor your precious angel baby.” This month the group will be making memory jars (supplies provided) and will be discussing what the topics will be for 2019 meetings. The group wants to be able to be there for what you are going through so please be willing to share ideas of what can help. Meetings are the first Thursdays of the month. Online Course Required Before Gathering Shed Antlers

Before you head out gathering shed antlers, the Division of Wildlife Resources reminds individuals to first complete the online course. To gather sheds anytime between February 1st and April 15th, a certificate of completion should be printed off and kept on your person. DNR reports, “The Antler Gathering Ethics course is in place to protect the animals during this critical time of year. The free course shouldn’t take more than a few minutes and will teach you how to responsibly gather shed antlers without stressing animals or damaging their habitat.” If you have young children and you’ve completed the course, then the certificate will cover the kids too. Gathering shed antlers is considered an activity the entire family can enjoy but it’s crucial that everyone remember that late winter and early spring is a tough time of year for deer, elk, and moose. “The animals often have a difficult time finding food. If you spook an animal and cause it to run, the animal has to use up fat reserves and energy it needs to survive through the winter,” DNR explains. Investigation Into Dinosaur Town Council Ongoing

Information is sparse concerning an investigation underway in Moffat County. Last week, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney announced that the Dinosaur Town Council is under investigation. Colorado.gov lists Dinosaur Town Council members as Mayor L.D. “Smitty” Smith, Mayor Pro-Tem Jannice Karren, and Trustees Debi Bird, Darcie Rocque, David Heinrich, Chuck Winkler, and Davonna Wilczek.

Jensen Experiences Weather Related Power Outage

The Jensen area experienced a weather related power outage on Tuesday night, making the severe weather conditions even tougher for residents in the area. Moon Lake Electric Association announced that the Jensen area, as well as other areas in their service territory, experienced the outage due to the significant snowfall. “Wet snow on power lines at times can be a real problem in the Basin, causing failures with voltage power supplied during the cold season,” shared Moon Lake. “The snow will often pile up on the lines and over time do what we call ‘unloading’. As the lines unload, they bounce and slap because of the weight of the snow. This can cause arcing that results in a power outage, or in some cases, you might see blinking in your power.” It’s believed that the area received approximately 12 to 13 inches of snow in a short period of time, causing the outage.

Rockslide Closes I-70 in Colorado; Increases Traffic on Highway 40

What could have been a deadly situation, thankfully turned out to just be a highly inconvenient one. A rockslide in Glenwood Canyon in Colorado closed I-70 on Tuesday. National Weather Service reports that “rapidly freezing and thawing temperatures combined with precipitation make for ideal conditions for rockslides in extreme terrain.” Tuesday’s rockslide was an important reminder of the dangerous impact that winter weather can have in western Colorado. It took most of the day for crews to clear the roadway enough for one lane to be open. Highway 40 felt the increase in diverted traffic.

Marriage and The Family Programs

KVEL in association with Utah State University Uintah Basin will be having a series of talk radio discussions focusing on local social issues. The series called Marriage and the Family will be presented by USU’s Dr. David Law and USU FCHD Graduate Latrisha Fall. Dr. Law is an Associate Professor of Family, Consumer and Human Development and is actively studying family life with three current research projects.

ReConnect Program for Rural Areas

USDA Rural Development will be holding webinars and workshops to help provide information about their ReConnect Program. This program offers loans, grants and combinations thereof to aid in bringing broadband to rural areas. The hope is to bring high-speed broadband that will enable rural communities to perform critical needs such as precision agriculture, as well as fuel long-term economic development.

Uintah Basin Healthcare Gives Thanks for Local Donations

Uintah Basin Healthcare has extended sincere thanks for some generous donations received. The Newfield Foundation recently donated $50,000 to the Uintah Basin Medical Center. Half of that amount will benefit the Villa Adventures Program and half is for the Nursing Simulation Program. Uintah Basin Healthcare also recently offered their thanks to a young man who made a donation for his Eagle Project.
