KNEU 1250The Red Flag Warning from National Weather Service makes it clear that extreme caution is needed in the dry conditions in northeastern Utah and an incident south of Fort Duchesne on Tuesday really drives home the point. According to BIA Forestry and Fire officials, a fire was started Tuesday afternoon around 2:45pm along the highway approximately 2 miles south of Fort Duchesne.
The Utah Department of Transportation is hosting a meeting coming up on a pending Uintah Basin road project. The Gusher Passing Lane and Center Turn Lane project sounds self explanatory and includes adding a center turn lane in the town of Gusher and passing lanes on the outside of town.
If law enforcement is distributing a picture of someone, it’s rare that person is totally out of the loop as to why. That’s exactly the case, however, in Duchesne County this week as the Sheriff’s Office is sharing a photo in hopes that the community can help identify the pictured individual. The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office has asked the public to provide the name of the man in the picture because investigators believe he may be the victim of identity theft in an active case.
A beautiful day on the water went south quickly in Uintah County on Tuesday afternoon. A boating party on Red Fleet Reservoir called 9-1-1 on a report of a serious injury to an adult male. According to Red Fleet Park Manager Josh Hansen, the staff at Red Fleet were quickly notified and assisted along with the responding ambulance.
Large smoke columns can certainly be alarming, especially after such an awful summer of wildfires. Officials of Utah Fire Info are helping the public put the noticeable smoke in perspective, however. On Tuesday, an announcement was made that “pockets of ‘interior heat’ within the perimeter of the Dollar Ridge Fire are responsible for the smoke column that may be visible above the burn scar.
September is National Recovery Month and Vernal was home to its 5th Annual Recovery Day Event over the weekend. Friday night individuals were able to share their stories during an open speaker meeting of how they got clean and what they are doing to continue on their journey.
A column of smoke in northeastern Utah caused quite a stir on Monday, alarming members of the public. The smoke, however, was not cause for great concern. According to BLM representative Geoff Liesik, the smoke column was caused, in part, by planned firing operations on the Bender Mountain Fire carried out by firefighters to add depth to established containment lines.

Vernal will be hopping this weekend with teenage mountain bikers and their families with the region meet for the Utah High School Cycling League being held at Buckskin Hills on Saturday. There will be 33 teams competing this year with around a thousand student athletes. The competition will take place on the 5.7 mile loop course across 2,400 acres in a mixture of single tracks and rolling dirt roads.
A group of locals who want to support others affected by cancer have organized the “Let’s Talk”: Uintah Basin Cancer Support Group and all are invited to participate. Group organizer Cecilia Sullivan says this month the topic will be foods that can help fight cancer. The guest speaker will be Audry Butler, nutritionist and health coach.
While there were some injuries, they were rather minor considering the severity of a crash that took place on Highway 40 last Friday. According to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Hull, the accident took place on September 7th at 2:26pm at Mile Post 67 just west of the rest area. An 18-year-old female attempted to pass a semi traveling eastbound and drove her vehicle into oncoming traffic.
The Division of Wildlife Resources is seeking information on a Uintah County poaching case. On Wednesday, August 22nd, a dead doe was discovered in the area of East McKee Road off Highway 191, shares the DWR.
