KNEU 1250There’s no way to measure all the ways cancer affects families during and after a diagnosis. A group of locals who want to support others affected by cancer have organized the “Let’s Talk”: Uintah Basin Cancer Support Group and all are invited to participate. Group organizer Cecilia Sullivan says this month there is a change of meeting place as the meeting will be held at Ashley Regional Medical Center.
A murder charge was filed this week in connection with an altercation that took place in Uintah County last April. At the time, the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office stated that their deputies were investigating an altercation that took place at a residence near Pelican Lake just after 1:00pm on April 13th.
While the total acreage burned by the Dollar Ridge Fire has grown, so has the percent of containment. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, as of Wednesday night at 8:46pm, the size of the Dollar Ridge Fire had reached 56,687 acres and the percent of perimeter contained was increased to 60 percent.
SITLA, the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration, has requested title to 440 acres of federal parcels in Uintah County, according to a BLM Vernal Field Office news release. The announcement explains that the transfer of the parcels are supported by the ‘Utah Enabling Act of July 16, 1894’ which “supports the state’s schools through the land grant managed by the state.”
Former UHP trooper Rex Olsen was sentenced on Wednesday to three years of probation for starting the Mile Marker 166 Fire on BLM land in Uintah County on May 30th of 2017. Judge Dale A. Kimball ordered Olsen to pay $102,958.96 in restitution. While Olsen did not receive jail time, he is serving time in the Uintah County Jail as part of his sentence for starting the Maeser Highway Fire in June of 2017.
The Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo draws a crowd every year but special attention is given to certain members of the community and for good reason. The annual Special Needs Rodeo provides an opportunity for those with special needs and their families to enjoy the excitement of this annual event. The Special Needs Rodeo kicked off on Wednesday evening with a carnival held at the Western Park Hockey Rink.
Making good on their word, Naples City will be hosting a fireworks show in the 24th of July at the Naples Park. The Naples City Council approved hosting fireworks on July 24th and New Year’s Eve again this year after the events were successful in 2017.
The Damage Assessment Teams provided an official report of the losses from the Dollar Ridge Fire in Duchesne and Wasatch Counties. Based on their report on the morning of July 9th, the Dollar Ridge Fire has destroyed 74 homes and damaged 6 more. Additionally, it has destroyed or damaged 131 camp trailers, 81 utility trailers, 158 sheds or agricultural buildings, and 25 vehicles.
Hunting many species of birds in Utah is as simple as buying a game license but for four specific species, a special permit is required. The Division of Wildlife Resources shares that anyone hoping to hunt tundra swan, sharp-tailed grouse, greater sage grouse, or sandhill crane this fall, need to get their paperwork in soon.
A 6-year-old went briefly missing last week in Duchesne County but thankfully was spotted by the crew of a medical helicopter assisting on the search. According to Sgt. Carl Reilley, deputies were dispatched on July 6th on a call of a missing person near the end of Five Mile Road and Gate Canyon Ridge.The caller said he’d been searching for his grandson for 30 minutes but could not find him. Classic Air Medical was put on standby and Sgt. Reilley began working with Deputy Jeff Williams to try and find who it was that had called dispatch in order to get a starting point.

Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to offer any information they may have about a ‘Man with a Gun’ who scared a group of young men on the 4th of July. Deputies were dispatched to the BLM horse corrals in the Rock Springs area after 10pm on the night of July 4th after a man with a gun reportedly pointed his firearm at a group of young men and told them to get on the ground.
