Nearly 30 people stood before a judge last week in Summit County to explain why they missed jury duty in December that resulted in the mistrial of three men charged with raping a Uintah County girl. The judge listened to them one at a time resulting in 10 ordered to serve community service for failing to follow the instructions they received.

Utah Valley University was a hub of energy and competition this weekend for the state drill team championships. Basin teams competed well with Tabiona placing 3rd in the 1A championship and Union placing 5th in the 3A championship. Uintah was up against tough 4A competition and while they did not land a top 5 finish, they did take 2nd in the Military category and swept the drill down competition.
Zhondee Spring Nephi of Fort Duchesne has been indicted in U.S. District Court on a charge of murder. According to FBI Public Affairs Specialist Sandra Yi Barker, the body of a female was discovered on a road northwest of Whiterocks on Wednesday, August 23rd.
Leaders from the 25 rural counties in Utah gathered on Capitol Hill on Friday for Rural Day during the legislative session. The Hancock Cove Sewer Project continues to progress thanks to the mild weather. Crews continue to install sewer pipe both inside and outside the subdivision. Condie Construction reports that over 2000 feet of sewer main line have been installed per week over the last two weeks. A gravel drain trench will be complete to allow groundwater a path to the natural drainage at the gulch.
Vernal City Council met in a special work session on Thursday to explore the city priorities and initiatives for 2018. The work session had a list 37 items long and the group spent anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes on each item determining if it was a priority this year, explains Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion
It’s a comic book with a cause. As the flagship comic book for Glider Comix, Sugar Glider is the brainchild of a Vernal 12-year-old and her comic book collecting dad. Shelbi Webb, a 6th grader at Vernal Middle School, and her dad Jason were talking one day in March of 2017 how it would be fun to create their own comic book character.
Winter is a popular time to gather shed antlers in the Uintah Basin but the Division of Wildlife Resources has some timely reminders before heading out. First things first, if you plan to gather shed antlers anytime between February 1st and April 15th, a free course must be complete and once complete, a certificate of completion must be printed off and kept on your person while out gathering antlers. If you have young children and you’ve completed the course, then the certificate will cover the kids too.
The Uintah High School Athletic Director has been recognized by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. Also the Vice Principal at UHS, Bill Sivert is now a Certified Athletic Administrator.
With the election process starting up, Sheriff Vance Norton has announced that he will not be seeking re-election. “It’s hard to believe we are entering the last year of my 4 year term as Sheriff,” shares Norton.
