Give Em’ Health: National Diabetes Month

November is National Diabetes Month and TriCounty Health Department is starting now to spread the message that resources are available locally to help individuals and families living with diabetes. There are a lot of locals with diabetes, explains TriCounty Health representative Ferron Young, and for the newly diagnosed it is a big change in the family so it’s good to reach out to others that have been through the same thing for support.

Ashley Regional Medical Center Receives HealthInsight Quality Award

Ashley Regional Medical Center is the latest recipient of the Quality Award from HealthInsight, an independent quality organization. The award was presented to hospital representatives at a banquet on October 19th in St. George with Ashley Regional as one of ten hospitals in the state of Utah to be recognized. The HealthInsight Quality Award program was launched in September 2004 in order to promote transparency in health care. The award is for providers in nursing homes, hospitals, home health agencies and physician offices. HealthInsight uses national rankings in determining the award recipients. Congratulations Ashley Regional Medical Center on being recognized for delivering quality care.

DWR Says Deer Hunt Off to a Slow Start

The 2017 general rifle deer hunt has come out of the gates a bit slow. According to the Division of Wildlife Resources, northern Utah including northeastern Utah is among the areas that have seen the biggest change. A total of 144 deer came through the check stations on Saturday and Sunday, shares northern Utah wildlife manager Randy Wood, while a total of 282 deer came through at the same stations last year during the first two days of the hunt.

Roosevelt Man Accepts Plea Bargain in Theft Case

A Roosevelt man accepted a plea bargain earlier this month in connection with a Duchesne County case in which he was selling stolen items online. Prosecutors dismissed all charges in 7 cases of theft against Travis Kirk Cook as he pleaded guilty to felony possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, two counts of theft by receiving stolen property, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute

Winter Valley Fire Increases to Nearly 8,000 Acres

A fire in Moffat County that shut down Highway 40 and prompted evacuations last Thursday is now 50 to 70 percent contained, at last report. The fire grew to approximately 7,800 acres based on mapping of the fire from helicopters. Cooler temperatures and moisture are reported to have helped slow the fire over the weekend. Highway 40 reopened on Friday. The fire started around noon on Thursday and grew from 500 acres to 2,180 acres within 30-minutes that afternoon prompting the Highway closure and mandatory evacuations of residents and hunters. As of Thursday night, 25 to 30 residences were threatened as well as oil and gas structures, a communications tower, and a Federal Aviation Administration tower. Strong winds were to blame for the rapid spread of the blaze that grew to 5,200 acres by Friday.

Salt Lake Man Arrested in Uintah County for Kidnapping

A Salt Lake man was arrested and booked into Uintah County Jail on Monday for kidnapping following an incident that began in Salt Lake City and ended in Tridell. According to the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, Central Dispatch began receiving calls early in the afternoon on Labor Day from a female that sounded in distress but the woman would hang up before information could be gathered.
