MSHA Releases Final Report on Vernal Man’s Death in Deserado Mine

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has released their final report of investigation on the fatal accident that occured on August 3rd in the Deserado Mine in Rangely, Colorado that resulted in the death of a Vernal man. The tragic accident took the life of 32-year-old Jason Stevens who was found under a two-ton trough at the mine production facility. The MSHA report concludes that “the accident occurred because the mine operator did not ensure that the water box being dismantled was securely blocked against motion during the process.”

2018 Klondike Scouting Derby at Steinaker State Park

Scouts in the Vernal area of the High Uintah District are gearing up for their annual Klondike Derby with a few changes from the usual event. The annual event has typically been held at the James Bacon Memorial Park but thanks to last year’s heavy winter snow, the venue is not an option for this year’s Klondike.

Uintah County Trails Master Plan Meeting Held; Comments Still Welcome

A good group of community members invested in local trail planning attended the Uintah County Trails Master Plan meeting at USU in Vernal on Tuesday night. Around 50 people attended, mostly interested in an update on planning and when the Master Plan will be done. The Master Plan will be complete in May, explained project engineer Aaron Averett, and public comment continues to be accepted online with a link through the Uintah County Trails Master Plan Facebook page. The link leads to fourteen proposed projects, outlined with a clear map and description of each one along with an easy to use comment box. “We’ll be accepting comments through that link for another month,” explains Averett. Beautiful Day for Ice Fishing at Steinaker Fishing Tournament

The beautiful weather made for a fantastic day of ice fishing on Saturday for the 2018 Steinaker Ice Fishing Tournament. Nick Smith was the winner of the adult competition followed by Chad Boren and Ron Morgas. Daysen Rinder was the winner of the youth competition followed by Taylor Blodgett and Liam Merrel. There were 94 participants in the tournament this year with everyone going home with prizes, shares Steinaker State Park Assistant Manager Josh Hansen.

‘Children With Special Health Care Needs’ Clinics Returning to Uintah Basin

A service utilized by many local families that was discontinued last year will be renewing service as soon as this spring. According to TriCounty Health Care Coordinator Kristin Young, previous clinics of the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) was a contract the health department used to have with specialists from the University of Utah hospital that gave Basin families a chance to get needed services without traveling to Salt Lake City.

No-Show Jurors Answer to Judge After Rondeau/Flatlip Mistrial

Nearly 30 people stood before a judge last week in Summit County to explain why they missed jury duty in December that resulted in the mistrial of three men charged with raping a Uintah County girl. The judge listened to them one at a time resulting in 10 ordered to serve community service for failing to follow the instructions they received.
