KNEU 1250Prompted by an incident in the Vernal area, the Division of Wildlife Resources is reminding citizens across the state that it is illegal to keep wildlife as pets. “It is illegal to hold any protected wildlife captive in Utah,” shares the DWR.
This was the first year that UBTech had student Ambassadors. The program was implemented to offer students additional opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, collaboration, and networking skills. As Ambassadors, UBTech students become the face of the college by sharing their stories, mentoring peers, and recruiting potential students.
The BIA Forestry and Wildland Fire agency provided an update on June 21st with information on the “Horsecorn Fire” on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation 60 miles south/southwest of Vernal. As of Monday, the Horsecorn Fire was mapped at 662 acres burning in pinyon-juniper, sagebrush and grass.
BLM Colorado Fire provided an update on the West Fire on Monday at 5:00pm. The lightning caused West Fire in the Northwest corner of Moffat County has burned 2,403 acres.
Uintah Basin residents traveling to the Grand Junction area better pay attention.
Crews on the Bear Fire in Carbon County continue to make progress. As of the Monday update, containment had reached 93 percent with acreage remaining at 12,170 acres. Small areas of uncontained line remain on the southeast and southwest corners of the fire.
UDOT has provided an update on the Starvation Bridge project on Highway 40. Crews are finishing up the outside wall on the south side of the bridge and will be transitioning to the north. Be prepared for some new traffic patterns as the crews make the shift.
Safety continues to be emphasized as fire and fireworks restrictions continue to be announced. Uintah Recreation District has joined in with an important announcement. “Due to extreme drought conditions and high fire danger, Uintah Recreation District is asking all Uintah County residents to use extreme caution when using residential fireworks,” shares Uintah Recreation District.

Uintah County Heritage Museum has an exhibit called H20 Today on display. This exhibit was organized by the Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition Service to invite visitors to explore the beauty and essential nature of water, our planet’s lifeblood.
There have been closures and evacuations ordered due to the Oil Springs Fire in Rio Blanco County. According to the Sunday report, the Oil Springs Fire started on Friday, 20 miles south of Rangely and it was caused by lightning.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs Forestry and Wildland Fire-Uintah & Ouray Agency announced Sunday the details of a fire on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation. The Horsecorn Fire is approximately 60 miles South/Southwest of Vernal and as of Sunday evening was estimated at 200 to 250 acres.
