KNEU 1250UBTech presented this week at the Vernal Chamber luncheon on their successful well simulation program. Well Control Instructor Roy Arocho made the presentation, explaining that the program draws students from around the world. Well Control is the technique used in oil and gas operations to maintain a column of fluid and prevent uncontrolled releases of oil, gas, or formation fluids from a well.
Roosevelt City received notice on Tuesday, April 2nd that they were awarded over $200,000 by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to improve 500 East between Lagoon Street and 800 South. Receiving the funds from CDBG is quite an ordeal as it takes a great deal of labor to process and has very strict requirements.
Vernal City Council has agreed to move forward with a program to replace old water meters after it was discovered that many were failing. “We are experiencing water loss in our system above what is expected,” explains Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion. “We tested 8 older meters and 7 of them failed.” It was during a work session in February that the topic of reducing water loss was discussed and it was decided to send the older meters to USU for the testing that revealed the failure rate.
The city of Roosevelt wants city residents to know that with spring in the air and on the calendar it is City Cleanup and Free Dump Days. For Roosevelt residents bring a utility bill and a photo ID to K&K Sanitation in Ballard for free dumping and non-city residents can go to the Duchesne landfill.
The spring weather is bringing people back outdoors. Everyone busily rushing to and fro on foot, as well as in vehicles. The Utah Department of Public Safety wants to remind pedestrians and motorists of their obligations and responsibilities of keeping each other safe. Motorists should not be operating a vehicle within 3 feet of a pedestrian so yield at all stop/yield signs and stop when exiting a driveway or alley before crossing any sidewalk area. Be sure to give way to all pedestrians and any other traffic on the sidewalk. Also drivers, never pass another vehicle that is stopped or yielding to a pedestrian. Pedestrians must give vehicles right of way when crossing outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Jaywalking is defined as crossing at any point other than a marked crosswalk if you are between two adjacent intersections with traffic lights. Don’t cross an intersection diagonally unless there is a specific signal for it, obey the railroad crossing warnings, and yield to emergency vehicles. The Duchesne County Children’s Justice Center and Roosevelt Theaters have partnered to support Child Abuse Awareness Month with a special movie day this weekend. Representatives from the Children’s Justice Center and their Friends Board will be attending the 1:00 pm Saturday movie matinee at the Roosevelt Twin Theater handing out backpacks that have water bottles, and a few fun items inside, as well as Child Abuse Awareness information for the children and their families. Duchesne County Children’s Justice Center Director Cheryl Boren says the event is simply a special opportunity for the center to give information to the community regarding child abuse awareness.
A decade old tradition is just two weeks away and is unfortunately underfunded at the moment. The Neola Easter Egg Hunt started as parents of a family with small children gathering community members to have a easter egg hunt in their yard. It has grown to become a central event to the area taking place at the Neola fairgrounds. It has always been run by donations but this year has been slow.
The Division of Wildlife Resources has good news. While it was a harsh winter with heavy snow in Utah, the deer population survival is looking good. According to a DWR News Release, adult deer survival is currently at 92% statewide. “This is an above-average mortality year for the northern third of the state, but we have had worse,” shares big game coordinator Kent Hersey.
On Tuesday, Governor Gary Herbert signed S.B. 103 into law. Entitled Victim Targeting Penalty Enhancements, the bill allows a harsher penalty of those that are found guilty of a hate crime. The bill states that criminal offenses against victims that were selected because of certain personal abilities will have enhanced penalties, while still maintaining an individual’s constitutional right of free speech.
Several canal projects are underway in Uintah County. Uintah Water Conservancy District General Manager William Merkley provided a general update on the projects and their progress during the NewsTalk KVEL Monday radio forum.
On January 31st, the Altamont community, joined by others, came together for a raffle and dinner fundraiser in support of local high school student Evee Jessen. What had started out as a small ailment for Evee had quickly become a deadly septic infection and a stack of medical bills, prompting the fundraiser event on January 31st.
