KNEU 1250For those anglers wanting to hit some ice fishing on Flaming Gorge Reservoir, DWR aquatic biologist Ryan Mosley has some tips. He suggests that anglers get a lake map and study it thoroughly. The north end of the reservoir known as Buckboard usually freezes first and offers great fishing.
At a recent Roosevelt City Council meeting, the recipients of the 2018 Extra Mile Day Awards were honored. The two individuals who received the awards were nominated by the community and then were selected by the council.

Dr. Shane Powell, eye surgeon and ophthalmologist explains that 1 in 100 people are affected by the disease, especially the elderly. The condition affects the back of the eye that then leads to loss of central vision.
Today’s winter storm could be doing the Basin a big favor by breaking up the current inversion. According to Dr. Seth Lyman of the USU Bingham Research Center, winter ozone levels began building on Friday afternoon. Combined with strong inversion conditions, an exceedance of the EPA standard was likely, especially in the central Basin.
The state of Utah is celebrating the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. Governor Gary Herbert and Lt. Governor Spencer Cox are asking members of the public to honor this day by giving to their local food pantry.
A new year brings new goals and new accomplishments. Well that is if you haven’t given up on your goals by now. According to TriCounty Health, about halfway through the month of January most people have dropped resolutions and when it comes to health goals, TriCounty Health wants to change that. Jordan Mathis, TriCounty Health Director, suggests that individuals break down the yearly goals into weekly goals. Studies show that setting smaller goals is better for success.“Setting mini-goals creates a feeling of accomplishment, and when someone feels positive, they tend to make more positive choices. It’s the snowball effect,” Marjorie Cohn, a registered dietitian, and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says. Mathis also says that humans are already trained to recognize Monday as a reset and thus can be used to renew if we relapse. Also to note, although we still need 150 minutes a week of physical activity, the updated guidelines state that it can be any physical activity. That is about 22 minutes of physical activity in a day without it being the previous recommendation of 10 minutes being aerobic. Move more, when you can and how you like. The Lane Frost Challenge thrills fans every year as cowboys compete to carry on the legacy of Lane Frost and this weekend is the 19th year for the competition. Lane Frost is known the world over for the movie ‘8 Seconds’ which tells the story of the bull riding legend that meets a tragic end. Lane grew up on a Lapoint farm where he started riding dairy calves at the age of 5.
UDOT has begun working with landowners along Highway 40 in Gusher as they work to purchase additional property needed for upcoming roadway improvements. In addition to working with landowners, UDOT has been focused on roadway design and the right-of-way process is expected to be complete by mid-2019. “While the right-of-way process is underway,” shares a UDOT update, “the project team will continue working on finalizing the roadway design. UDOT plans to send the project out for contractor bids by fall 2019. Construction is scheduled during 2020.” An Open House on the project was held in September where input was received. “Several attendees suggested continuing the project west toward the river [but] UDOT is not able to include additional widening improvements west of 8500 East with this project,” shares the update. “UDOT has documented your concerns and will incorporate them into future U.S. 40 projects as they are developed and funded.” For more information on this or other UDOT projects, visit www.udot.utah.gov.
While it was unsure last night with the heavy snow whether local schools would be in session as usual today, local districts have officially announced there will be no change in schedules. Duchesne County School District Student Services Director Scott Forsyth confirmed at 5am today that its school as usual today in DCSD. Uintah School District Superintendent Mark Dockins confirmed at 5:30am that school will also be in session as usual in Uintah School District.
Heavy precipitation moved across Utah Thursday night resulting in travel impacts through much of the state. UDOT reports road snow and slush the entire route of Highway 40 in Utah with moderate travel caution required through Uintah and most of Duchesne County and high travel caution required into Wasatch County at Strawberry Reservoir, Daniel’s Canyon, and Heber Valley to Park City. The heavy mountain snow also means I-80 in Parley’s Canyon east into Wyoming is high caution with impaired travel conditions expected into Friday.
