KNEU 1250The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office had sad news to report in a press release issued on Monday. According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home north of Roosevelt at about 8am on Sunday, August 5th, on a report of an unresponsive child at the residence.
Roosevelt City is eager to welcome new officers to Roosevelt PD this fall. “We’re very pleased to be adding three new officers with roots in the Uintah Basin,” shares Roosevelt City Manager Ryan Snow.

A 19-year-old Vernal man has been arrested and booked into the Uintah County Jail on multiple charges with more to come. According to a Vernal City Police press release, Steven McCarrel was arrested on July 30th and is being held on charges including theft, vehicle theft, and burglary.

The Duchesne County Fair is a favorite time of year for many Basin families and this year’s theme is Tropical Nights and Carnival Lights. Events tonight include the Arena Cross and Volleball while Tuesday is the big day for the Livestock Show, Baby Show, Home Arts Show, Pig Wrestling, and more.
A Uintah Basin icon and historical figure is making a permanent move after recently being purchased. The Moqui Indian with his headdress, red wrap, and peace pipe has sat on Roosevelt’s Main Street for years.
West Nile Virus is active in the Uintah Basin and residents are urged to take prevention seriously. According to the Utah Department of Health, there are now 9 mosquito pools in the state that have tested positive and two of those are in the TriCounty Health District, one in Duchesne County and one in Uintah County.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has recognized TriCounty Health Department for their exceptional WIC program that provides breastfeeding support. Tricounty Health received one of 78 awards given nationwide, four of which were to Utah Health Departments. They received the ‘Gold Loving Support Award of Excellence’ on Wednesday in Salt Lake City at the Utah Department of Health. The award recognizes exemplary WIC peer counselor programs that increase WIC participants who breastfeed. “The lactation support services at TriCounty Health Department are successful due in large part to the passion of our WIC staff to establish a healthy nutrition from birth,” shares WIC Program Director Katie Kissel. “By encouraging education and breastfeeding promotion, we hope that our communities can see the benefits of the lactation support services we offer and continue to utilize the WIC program for all their breastfeeding needs.” Breastfeeding support services provided at TriCounty Health Department are available to the entire public.
A teen that the FBI was actively looking for this week has been found safe. The 17-year-old female had been reported as missing and was last seen on Monday night at her residence by family in Fort Duchesne. The FBI joined the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the search when she was reported as missing.
