KNEU 1250One of the oldest charter schools in Houston Texas is receiving some love and support from local students who wanted to help after Hurricane Harvey. The Terra Academy in Vernal invited their students to each try to donate $1 to help out the Beatrix Maise Charter School in Houston that was affected after the hurricane.
Construction has been ongoing on the Vernal Regional Airport runway project . The paving portion of the project is now complete which is considered a major milestone in the project. The completion of the runway is considered a crucial part in upgrading local air service to support growth in the local economy.
Representative Rob Bishop is heading an effort aimed at balancing the interests between federal and local governments. As Chairman of the Speaker’s Task Force on Intergovernmental Affairs, Bishop held a hearing on Thursday to ask the question: “Are We ‘Federalizing’ Federalism?” to explore state and local government and interrelations with federal government.
The Vernal Area Chamber’s 2nd Quarter Outstanding Public Service Award recipient is Aaron Averett of Sunrise Engineering. Averett opened the Sunrise Engineering Vernal office 6 years ago after having worked for Sunrise Engineering in Washington, Utah for 8 years.
A sentencing hearing continued late this week in a case of double vehicular homicide that resulted in the death of a one-year-old and her 62-year-old grandmother on March 10th in Green River, Wyoming. Baby Stella Doak and her grandma Debra DeVries were at home when 68-year-old George Maestas drove his vehicle into the residence resulting in their death and the serious injury of another adult in the home.
By Intern Writers from Union High School Evan Percival and Brian Spencer Union High School for 67 years has been a place of thousands of student’s education, memories, and sentimental value. In the fall of 2018 the students at Union will be moving across the street to the new Union High School building. Classes at Union High School opened in 1951. This new high school was a combination of rival schools Roosevelt High School and Alterra High School. Union or, as some have referred to it as, “Yoon-Yun” was born. The original cost for construction and furnishings was $625, 419. The school opened with 455 students with Loman F. Hutchings as the first Principal. Over the years the school has been renovated 7 times. What is to become of this iconic building? Part of this magnificent building is now district offices. Much of the school however will be demolitioned to make room for a proposed indoor sports training facility. The existing outdoor sports arenas and courts will stay as part of the new Union High School campus. Superintendent David Brotherson said that his favorite memory of Union High School is “just being with the kids…to be able to leave a legacy at this school for [Students] to be proud of.”
A meeting aimed at public discussion and education on Proposition 5 is coming up. Proposition 5 asks voters to decide if Uintah County shall be authorized to impose a quarter of one percent sales tax, which is the equivalent of 1 cent for every $4 dollars spent, for the purpose of transportation services such as roads, traffic, pedestrian safety, public transit and non-motorized transportation.

Energy country is celebrating the EPA’s latest announcement that proposes to repeal the Obama administration’s “Clean Power Plan”. EPA administrator Scott Pruitt issued the notice which determined that the plan’s regulations exceed the EPA’s statutory authority.
The Ute Tribe issued a press release regarding the September 21st Tenth Circuit court decision to dismiss Wyoming v. United States. Because the United States already published its intent to repeal costly fracking rules published in 2015, the Tenth Circuit court followed by dismissing the appeals and suit related to those rules.
