Tundra Swans Arriving in Utah Marshes
Tundra swans are arriving throughout northern Utah this week. As of November 1st, biologists with the Division of Wildlife Resources had spotted more than 4,700 swans.

March of Dimes has recognized Ashley Regional Medical Center for “its work to give babies a healthier start in life.” TheThursday announcement explains that the hospital earned the recognition after reducing the number of elective inductions and cesarean deliveries at the hospital performed before 39 weeks of pregnancy to less than one percent.

Sheriff Warns of New Synthetic Drug
New opiate drugs are heightening concern among law enforcement and communities in the United States, most recently with teen fatalities linked to the drug Pink. Uintah County Sheriff Vance Norton and members of his team attended training this week focused on dealing with new opiate drugs and one drug in particular that is killing people throughout the United States.
Vernal Man Sentenced on Child Pornography Charges
A Uintah County man arrested last April and convicted of 40 charges related to child pornography was sentenced this week in 8th District Court. In August, Jeffrey Levi Batty pleaded Guilty to 40 counts of 2nd Degree Felony Sexual Exploitation of a Minor.
Roosevelt Holly Fair Expects Thousands
Roosevelt streets were hopping this week with the largest Halloween parade of little costumed kids of the annual event’s history. A different kind of parade will hit Roosevelt today and tomorrow with a massive turnout expected for the annual Holly Fair.
Vernal City Approves Dining Clubs
Vernal City Council approved an ordinance amendment Wednesday night that expands options for restaurants that sell alcohol. Vernal Brewing Company approached the City with a request to consider including a provision in the alcoholic beverage and licensing code to allow for what is defined by the state as “dining clubs”.
Travel Restrictions Announced for Utah Livestock and Pets
The Utah Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday that an outbreak of New World Screwworm in Florida means all Utahns traveling to and from Florida with pets or livestock will be required to take extra precautions when returning to Utah.
Main Jr. Charges Filed in 8th District Court
Charges have been filed in 8th District Court against James Hudson Main, Jr. A manhunt that began on Friday in Duchesne County and ended Sunday in Grand Junction found Main in custody in Grand Junction and law enforcement investigating crimes that took place over 2 days and 2 states.

The Duchesne County building could soon become a smoke free campus. Commissioners considered the change during Monday’s County Commission meeting.
DC Pipeline Economic Study Underway
A study aimed at measuring the cost of trucking oil from the Basin to refineries is underway as the DC Express Pipeline is explored. $600,000 dollars in grant funding was approved this fall by the Community Impact Board to perform the study that will explore the broader costs than just the fuel it takes to run the trucks.
Computer Recycling Opportunity
America Recycles Day is coming up next week and a special computer recycling opportunity will be available locally. In conjunction with the national event, the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce is opening their doors as a drop off location to dispose of used computer equipment from monitors to towers or keyboards.
