A Vernal man who threatened to use a bomb at a local business is behind bars and being held on no bail. According to the Vernal Police arresting statement, 38-year-old Joel Micah Lyda had gone into a local establishment and told an acquaintance that he was upset about a recent arrest and based on the outcome of that case he was planning to make a bomb in order to “get even”.
Weather enthusiasts in the Vernal area will finally have their chance to become an official storm spotter for the National Weather Service. Classes have been offered throughout the region but the Vernal class had been unscheduled and delayed throughout the spring and summer.
A Motion to Recuse the judge from presiding over the Ute Tribe versus the State of Utah litigation has been dismissed. On March 7th, the Ute Tribe filed the motion on three assertions; that Judge Bruce S. Jenkins is “biased”, “senile”, and “a Mormon.” In Court Document 1223 filed on July 25th in the Central Division of the U.S. District Court for the State of Utah, the court concluded that the motion to disqualify Judge Bruce S. Jenkins from presiding in the case is without merit on all three assertions.
Utah’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for local Counties remained steady. Daggett County remained at 5.4 percent. Uintah County also maintained the previous month’s rate at 10.2 percent and Duchesne County showed a slight decrease in unemployment from 9.6 percent to 9.4 percent.
Today is the day local livestock owners can attend a special meeting concerning changes to the Veterinary Feed Directive. To be implemented next year, the Veterinary Feed Directive will have significant impacts on how producers obtain feeds containing certain animal medications.
Graffiti may be more of an urban trend but that hasn’t stopped it from popping up recently in area communities. According to Vernal City Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell, graffiti has become an issue locally this summer.
A middle of the night incident resulted in a non-fatal shooting in Daggett County. According to the Daggett County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call of shots fired at approximately 1:25am early Tuesday morning.
Unclaimed property in Utah could mean money in the pockets of some Uintah Basin residents. Presenting at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday, the Treasurer for the State of Utah, David Damschen, explained that there is $2.2 million dollars in unclaimed money in Uintah County alone. Unclaimed property is intangible property such as savings accounts, certificates of deposit, utility refunds, un-cashed checks, stocks or contents of safe deposit boxes, that have been unclaimed or abandoned.
Bids to lease Duchesne County land for oil and gas extraction was approved by the Duchesne County Commission this month. The County received bids from Transcontinent Oil on two pieces of property.
It’s the time of year for electrofishing, at least for the Division of Wildlife Resources. Biologists will be surveying Currant Creek Reservoir and the streams that feed into it in the coming days. The electrofishing equipment shocks the fish with a mild electric current, allowing biologists to scoop the fish out of the water to collect and record data.
Suppression efforts for a fire that started in Dinosaur National Monument over the weekend are expected to continue throughout the week. Fire crews from the Monument along with several other agencies responded to the fire north of the Yampa Bench Road, about 2 miles west of Haystack Rock,on Friday.
