KNEU 1250As a whole, Utah’s economy continues to grow. According to new data from the Department of Workforce Services, Utah’s employment for June 2016 grew by about 3.5 percent, adding 48,500 jobs to the economy from one year previous. While continued growth is indicated, the unemployment rate for the state actually increased by two-tenths of a percent from the month before to 4.0 percent.
It’s the time of year for electrofishing, at least for the Division of Wildlife Resources. Biologists will be surveying Currant Creek Reservoir and the streams that feed into it in the coming days. The electrofishing equipment shocks the fish with a mild electric current, allowing biologists to scoop the fish out of the water to collect and record data.
Tragedy struck on Flaming Gorge on Friday when a teenage girl was hit by lightning and killed. According to the Daggett County Sheriff’s Office, a Utah County family was traveling to shore on a pair of Sea Doo jet skis near the Hideout Canyon Camp at approximately noon on Friday. Passenger, 14-year-old Brooklyn Reynolds, was fatally struck by lightning as her step-mother, 49-year-old Jayleen Reynolds, was driving the Sea Doo.
Suppression efforts for a fire that started in Dinosaur National Monument over the weekend are expected to continue throughout the week. Fire crews from the Monument along with several other agencies responded to the fire north of the Yampa Bench Road, about 2 miles west of Haystack Rock,on Friday.
With West Nile Virus confirmed locally, TriCounty Health Department always encourages appropriate precautions for residents and their livestock. Remember that the mosquitos that carry West Nile Virus bite from dusk to dawn. Wear long pants and sleeves, use repellents with DEET or Picardin, and remove any standing water around your home where mosquitos can breed.
The regulatory clock is ticking as the EPA considers air quality data for the Uintah Basin that categorizes the Basin in noncompliance with EPA ozone standards. According to Dr. Seth Lyman, USU Energy Research Director, the change last Fall in the EPA pollution standard to 70 parts per billion sends the basin into nonattainment for ozone and as a result stricter regulations are the expected result.
Vernal is a hotspot for little baseball stars and their families this week with the 9U tournament going on for the Pacific Southwest Region of Cal Ripken Baseball. 12 teams of these serious little leaguers came to compete this week including 4 from Utah, 5 from California, 2 from Arizona and 1 from Nevada.
It seems obvious to most but safe driving includes paying attention to the road and limiting distractions as much as possible. “We are urging people to stay attentive while driving by paying attention to other drivers and pedestrian traffic,” shares the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office. “Distracted driving is always a concern for law enforcement and with new gaming crazes for phones and other media devices that concern has grown, especially with younger drivers.”

The Vernal area Scout Breakfast will be held at the Colton Pavilion on Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30am.
Plans for a nuclear power plant on the Green River can move forward after a ruling on Thursday by the Utah Court of Appeals. HEAL Utah, an environmental agency opposed to the plans for a power plant, filed the appeal after a district court judge upheld the decision by the state engineer to allow a diversion of 53,600 acre feet of water from the Green River for the nuclear power plant.
Changes made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration could affect local livestock owners come January 2017. Local administrators of the Utah State University 4-H Extension are helping to spread the word that changes to the Veterinary Feed Directive will have significant impacts on how producers obtain feeds containing certain animal medications.
Applications for Vernal’s Pioneer Day Parade are available to pick up at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce office. The parade this year will be held on Saturday, July 23rd. Lineup for the parade is at 8:30am and the parade will run down Main Street at 10:00am.
