KNEU 1250The Steinaker Dam repair project is officially complete and is being highlighted this week in Water Power Magazine. Officials became aware of a problem with the dam in the fall of 2014 when a slope failure was observed in the dam. While it was not considered an emergency situation, plans for repair and safety modifications got underway.
Shaun Chapoose, member of the Ute Indian Tribe and resident of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, officially announced in a press release Friday his candidacy for president of the National Congress of American Indians. Chapoose is currently the chairman of Utah Tribal Leaders which includes leadership from the 8 federally recognized tribes in Utah.

“Admire the Survivors” is a local campaign of not just raising awareness of breast cancer but a chance for the Basin to celebrate those that have survived their battle with cancer. In the U.S. a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer on average every two minutes. That means that in 2019 alone 270,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed.
Once thought to be extinct, the black-footed ferret has been among the wildlife in Utah since being reintroduced in 1999 and a colony in the Coyote Basin area of Uintah County is among the lucky locations in the United States to receive more of the ferrets from special breeding programs again this year. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources released 29 total black-footed ferrets into the Coyote Basin colony on Tuesday, consisting of 25 kids and 4 adult ferrets.
Local scouting officials and countless others have worked tirelessly the last two years to get Bacon Park back up and running and it is better now than ever before. It was a devastating site during the 2017 winter when volunteers traveled to Bacon Park to scout out conditions only to find that heavy, saturated snow had collapsed the park’s large pavilions as well as some picnic tables.
The Uintah School Board welcomed public comment during their October 2nd work session and a common theme emerged. The board provided a sign up sheet for anyone wishing to speak For or Against Proposition 4. While no one signed up to speak against Prop 4, eight people signed up to speak in support of it with multiple comments focusing on the need for mental health services for students.
Last year the rodeo club of the University of Wyoming was able to place in the College National Finals. They are more than half way through the season and are showing the competition that they are ready to be in the finals again.

This year there will be awesome finisher medals and organizers hint this is the first and likely the last of its kind. Also, this year there will be the option of purchasing coveted merchandise like t-shirts and hoodies whether or not you register to race.
It might feel a little early but it’s time to get out the warm coats and for those still hanging on, put away the shorts and sandals. National Weather Service reports that a cold front will sweep through the area starting Wednesday evening, bringing the coldest air of the season and a major drop from previous temperatures.
The efforts of the American Red Cross are definitely not a mystery to the general public. They hold about 500 blood drives every day. Part of the effort is because less than 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood or platelets while 6.8 million people are in need of blood in the United States alone.
USU and Evans Family Media are once again combining resources to improve the overall quality of life for residents in the Uintah Basin. The start of that union became the USU’s Marriage and Family program that ran weekly during USU’s semesters with Dr. David Law, teaching ways to strengthen marriages and families.
