KNEU 1250The Division of Wildlife Resources has announced that this year they will be stocking fewer fish in Utah waters but that the fish will be bigger. Stocking numbers have been consistent since 2014 but new research has convinced the DWR to focus on quality over quantity, producing higher quality fish with better survival rates.
In a demonstration by Pickett Pest Control to the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce a special trained dog showed its abilities to sniff out bedbugs. One person in the room was planted with the pests and the dog sniffed that individual out. A fallacy of bedbugs is that they are a city or “dirty” place problem but the truth is that they have become a common occurance wherever there is a food source.
As UBTech students continue to highlight the level of skills and training that they receive by continually achieving at the State and National SkillsUSA competitions, a local business wants to help. Businessmen Todd Bro and Chad Grimm became impressed with how the SkillsUSA competition has a wide outreach of students and the program’s mission to encourage excellence through competition.
A Utah County man died on April 18th after a tragic accident while at Fred Hayes State Park at Starvation. According to a Utah State Parks news release, the man and a friend, both in their mid-to-late 70’s, were shore fishing at the reservoir at approximately 3:40pm. “While the two were walking along the shore near the northwest side of the Freedom Bridge, the victim slipped and fell.
Utah State University Uintah Basin has recently received a scholarship endowment from a local organization. Northeastern Counseling Center donated $25,000 dollars for the USU-Uintah Basin Master of Social Work students.
Among the highlights of the Vernal Comic Con held earlier this month was the display of Ted Munford’s jaw dropping Halloween costume collection. Munford attended the event, staying on hand to answer questions and pose for pictures with the wide-eyed fans of his epic costumes. He had previously donated Ironman and the Incredible Hulk to the library and his Buzz Lightyear costume, which was originally donated to Prime Time For Kids, had made it to the library as its home as well.
One of the traditions of the Uintah Basin Relay for Life, the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, is a cancer Survivor Dinner. Organizers recognize that the disease is continually plaguing new individuals and would like to stay current with survivors so that they can be recognized.
Despite the snow in the mountains we are in spring and Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery is preparing. The Hatchery announced last week that they received 36,000 pounds of food that will last until the end of May to raise bonneville cutthroat trout. Last weekend 360,000 trout eggs came from Mantua State Hatchery to Jone Hole National Fish Hatchery.
There is plenty of fun to be had around the Uintah Basin for Easter weekend. The 10th annual Neola Community Easter Egg Hunts include a teen flashlight hunt tonight from 8:30 to 10pm and the kids egg hunt on Saturday at 10am SHARP! Bluebell is also having their Easter egg hunt at 10am. The Roosevelt Easter Egg Dive is Saturday at 12:30pm at the Roosevelt Aquatic Center (General Admission Applies).
Safety is the end goal of a UDOT project currently underway in Roosevelt. Roosevelt City provided the update on the pedestrian light projects at two city crossings stating that UDOT crews have been out this week at the intersection of 200 South and Highway 40 installing the pedestrian-activated flasher.
Charges have been filed in an April 7th officer-involved critical incident in Duchesne County. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, 38-year-old Codey Dale Arrowchis has been charged in 8th District Court with first-degree felony aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, second-degree felony aggravated assault producing loss of consciousness, third-degree felony aggravated assault, two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence in the presence of a child, carrying a dangerous weapon while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and intoxication.
For those that enjoy the ATV experiences that the Uintah Basin offers, a new trail has been completed. According to Ashley National Forest, the first of two sections of connector trails has been completed in the Ashley National Forest. The connector is part of the Badlands ATV trail and connects Avintaquin Campground to Highway 191.
