KNEU 1250It was a weekend of hot competition and hard fought matches at the Tournament of Champions at Vernal’s Western Park over the weekend. 31 teams with a total of about 630 wrestlers competed in the tournament coming from around Utah and surrounding states.
It was a night to remember for the Uintah swim team at the Wasatch swim meet on Thursday. While majority of the Ute swimmers broke personal best times during the meet, one young man had an especially banner night.
These ain’t your usual singing nuns! Nunsense, a musical comedy, opens tonight at Vernal Theatre: LIVE. Nunsense features ‘a hilarious talent show staged by five survivors of the Little Sisters of Hoboken nunnery. The high energy talent of Taunia Wheeler, Claire Owens, Nashelle Jackson, Carrie Chapman, and Cami Harrison make up the cast of spunky nuns.
The small town of Tabiona lost one of its residents in a house fire Thursday. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, flames engulfed the home of 66-year-old Rickey Evin Wilberg early Thursday morning. Firefighters responded but tragically Wilberg did not get out and his body was recovered Thursday afternoon.
How many bluegill do you think are still in Steinaker Reservoir? Guess higher. Although water levels have dropped dramatically as the reservoir dam is being repaired, the deepest channels are at fifteen feet and the bluegills are thriving. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources recently tagged 100 bluegill and only had 3 report back. It might not sound like much but it helps the DWR to know that there are anywhere between 37,000 to 39,000 bluegill still in Steinaker.
Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. Three men are in Uintah County Jail on a long list of charges including kidnapping and it was all over a missing “sentimental bandana”. According to the Probable Cause Statement, the incident occurred on January 5th when Cody Joseph Alvarez, Kevin Walker, and Dylon Smuin told a group of six people that “no one was leaving the premises until after a bandana belonging to [Alvarez] was located.”
The winter months keep us inside more which makes it easier for diseases to be spread. TriCounty Health wants to remind people that hand washing is one of the most important things we can do to prevent illness. The CDC tells us that we should wash our hands in the following situations; before, during, and after preparing food, before eating food, before and after caring for someone who is sick, before and after treating a cut or wound, after using the toilet, after changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, after touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste, after handling pet food or pet treats and after touching garbage.
Craig Police Department is asking the public to keep an eye out for a wanted individual and to contact them if he is seen. 47-year-old Todd Smith is wanted for Contempt related to dangerous drug charges. Smith is a 5 foot 10 inch white male with brown hair and brown eyes weighing approximately 135 pounds.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has asked residents of the state of Utah to come forward with any information concerning an unknown bank robber that has been dubbed the Holiday Bandit. He is described as a male, 5’4” to 5’8” in height and white or hispanic.
There were no injuries in a robbery in Vernal City early in the morning on Wednesday. According to Vernal Police, the robbery took place around 4:30am at the 7-11 convenience store on Highway 40 next to McDonalds on January 9th. “The suspect fled the scene within the 2 or 3 minute timeframe it took for officers to arrive,” shares Vernal Police.
The Marshal’s Office in Dinosaur, Colorado has reached out to its Utah neighbors as they are seeking leads on a business break in. At approximately 11:00pm on Sunday, January 6th, a male and female broke into the Rocky Mountain Cannabis Marijuana Dispensary.
Utah Division of Wildlife Resources have been keeping busy. Just this last month the DWR was involved in dropping tons of seed throughout areas that were affected by wildfire. One of those areas was the Dollar Ridge Fire site. According to Utah’s Watershed Restoration Initiative, the Dollar Ridge Fire Rehabilitation has a budget of $1,415,223.00 dollars and includes enough seed for 26,136 acres. Included in the budget is the cost of ariel delivery, four weeks of youth crew to spray weeds, and for forest service to treat noxious weeds and to repair trail signage. Once the snow has melted away, these special seed mixes will help restore vegetation, benefiting wildlife and livestock that use our wild landscapes.
