Local Thanksgiving Day Events

Thanksgiving is a well known time for family but instead of staying indoors here are some events to get the family out and involved. Dr. Shane Powell of Uintah Basin Healthcare is hosting his annual free Thanksgiving 5k Run/Trot/Walk in Roosevelt. It will start at 8am at the Roosevelt Aquatic Center. Hot chocolate will be provided at the finish line courtesy of Uintah Basin Healthcare. For more information, call 435-725-0040. In Vernal there is the Gobbler Thanksgiving Day 5k. This is a charity run for two local families, the Reynolds and the Northerns. Participants will meet at the USU parking lot. Registration starts at 8am and the race will go from 9am-11am. Besides the race, raffle tickets will be sold with the actual drawing on Monday. Coffee and hot chocolate will be provided by Beans and Brews with some doughnuts as well. Lastly, for those that need a meal or may not have family around, the Quarry Steakhouse and local businesses are holding a free community Thanksgiving dinner. The ‘Fill the Need’ dinner will be from 12pm to 4pm at the Quarry. If you would like to volunteer to help with this event, please contact Kathleen Hacking at 435-789-2337.

If you’re planning to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, you’re not alone. AAA predicts that you’ll be among 54.3 million Americans who will travel 50 or more miles from home to celebrate Thanksgiving. That is a 4.8 percent increase over 2017 and the highest travel volume since 2005.

Uintah Basin Healthcare Opens Doors to New Women’s Center in Vernal

Uintah Basin Healthcare held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, November 14th, that officially celebrated the opening of the Vernal Women’s Health Center. “Uintah Basin Healthcare has delivered as high as 700+ babies annually, with approximately 40% of those deliveries coming from Uintah County,” shared President and CEO of Uintah Basin Healthcare Jim Marshall.

UBTech Student of the Year: McKinlee Thacker

UBTech announced their 2018-2019 Student of the Year at a special awards banquet on Thursday night held at the UBTech Roosevelt Campus. McKinlee Thacker is a student in the Automotive Maintenance, Light Repair, and Welding programs of UBTech and was named the new Student of the Year, replacing 2017-2018 Student of the Year Faith Burk.

Second Body Recovered from Strawberry Reservoir; Dog the Sole Survivor

Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office has announced that the body of 26-year-old Chenoa L. Plank was recovered from Strawberry Reservoir Sunday afternoon. Authorities have shared that Plank and 24-year-old Benjamin Magalis were fishing near Chicken Creek West on Monday, November 12th, when their canoe capsized. “The temperature of the water was about 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Chenoa’s dog, Hazel, was wearing a life jacket and was rescued… Sadly, Chenoa and Benjamin perished in the water.

Another Amazing Year for Enchanted Forest Charity Auction

Generosity overflowed during the Enchanted Forest charity auction held at the Crossroads Community Center in Roosevelt. The dinner and auction was held Thursday evening, with 21 trees raising $120,000 dollars for local charities and causes. Duchesne County Chamber Director Irene Hansen says there was another $30,000 dollars raised in tree sponsorships and it’s expected an additional $10,000 dollars on all the silent auction items.

Search for Missing Rock Springs Man Officially Suspended

The Search and Rescue operation for a missing 74-year-old Rock Springs man has been officially suspended. Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office announced last week that all search efforts for Terry Meador proved unsuccessful. Meador was reported missing on October 25th after he failed to return from a solo hunting trip south of Rock Springs. His unoccupied vehicle was found badly stuck about 3 miles north of the summit of Pine Mountain.

To anyone who was on or around Strawberry Reservoir between November 12th and 16th, the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office is asking for your help. Anyone who may have picked up a gray colored life jacket is asked to call Wasatch County Dispatch. Several items were innocently picked up out of the water this week that could potentially change a missing person search in a significant way.

Become Familiar with How to Hunt Waterfowl

Have you ever had the desire to learn how to hunt waterfowl? The Division of Wildlife Resources is hosting a free waterfowl-hunting clinic on Saturday, November 17th, at the Vernal Game Farm. The clinic will run from 10am to 1pm and is open to all ages. Some of the things individuals will learn include properly identifying waterfowl species, the set up and use of a variety of blinds, how to call ducks and geese, how to handle a hunting dog, ways to arrange a spread of decoys and shooting a shotgun.
