It tells a fantastic story of family and determination. The acting is spectacular and every actor gives 110%. Mindy Palmer, the director of the show says, “The new auditorium is amazing. Newsies has some of the best musical theatre songs ever written. If you don’t know it, come and find out why you love it… because you will. The stage set, lighting, and complete performance is amazing.” Shows are at 7:00 pm and ticket prices are from $9.50 – $13.50. The matinee show at 2:00 pm on Saturday is half price ($5.50 – $ 9.50). ‘This Is Vernal’ is a phrase you’re likely to see and hear more often with the launch of a new campaign in Uintah County that is more than just billboards and flyers. It is also providing a one-stop community calendar at www.ThisIsVernal.com.
The Vernal Regional Airport is asking the public to help them reach their goal of 10,000 enplanements in 2018. An enplanement is one person boarding in Vernal and departing the airport and when 10,000 is reached in a calendar year, the airport qualifies for a $1,000,000 dollar grant in federal funding for fiscal year 2020.
Tragedy struck for a Roosevelt family on Wednesday and the community is rallying around them and asking for donations. The ‘Adams Family Fire Relief Fund’ is set up on GoFundMe.com where monetary donations are being gathered. The family is also in need of physical donations. Items needed right away include kitchen appliances and utensils, young children’s toys, books, blankets, winter coats, gloves, and clothing for three boys ages 13, 10, and 6 and an 8-year-old girl.
While the holidays are meant to be filled with cheer, it can be a very trying time for those struggling to find some. TriCounty Health Department is partnering with American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to bring an event to help the Uintah Basin community. It is called Survivor Day and it is meant for those people that have felt the harrowing effects of suicide loss to gather together and share stories of hope and healing. All around the world communities will host a unique event with various programming, however, the single shared thread will be the viewing of a documentary entitled ‘A Daughter’s Journey’ that offers a message of growth, resilience and connection. Everybody’s favorite practically perfect nanny is dropping into Meeker. The Meeker Arts and Cultural Council is supporting the Center Stage Youth Theatrical Group in presenting the Fall Broadway Musical production of Mary Poppins Jr. This is the 9th annual musical put on by the theatrical group and features 45 youth from third through eighth grade as cast and crew.
Throughout the state of Utah big game animals are doing well, with specific pockets of the state doing extremely well. Division of Wildlife Resources biologists are recommending that more hunts be added to help manage populations. Relevant to the Uintah Basin is the proposal that new bison hunts be offered in the Book Cliffs of eastern Utah.
A young boy in Indiana has a package coming in the mail that the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office hopes will brighten his day. Four months ago, 12-year-old Jeremiah Derks of Kokomo, Indiana was diagnosed with cancer. While the months of treatment and surgeries that have followed haven’t been easy, there is one thing that has provided a boost for he and his family.
An additional arrest has been made in the case of a beating death that took place last April in Duchesne County. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Kristy Lee Whitchurch was “arrested on Tuesday, November 13th, after a witness came forward and told investigators Whitchurch was directly involved in the April 6th assault that resulted in the death of 51-year-old Sherry Lynn Melo.”
The victim of the stabbing in a Vernal home in September was laid to rest over the weekend. Many attended the funeral services for Cal Dee Reynolds on Saturday, November 10th. At last report, the Uintah County Attorney’s Office shared that a suspect in the stabbing was in custody but there was no time frame as to when charges would be filed as the passing of Mr. Reynolds necessitated additional work and investigation. Once thought to be extinct, the black-footed ferret has been among the wildlife in Utah since being reintroduced in 1999 and a colony in the Coyote Basin area of Uintah County is among the lucky locations in the United States to receive more of the ferrets from special breeding programs this year. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources released 14 black-footed ferrets into the Coyote Basin colony in early November and will be releasing 11 more into the colony on Thursday, November 15th, shares DWR Conservation Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby.
