A program that has helped many families in the Uintah Basin build sweat equity in their own homes is seeking applicants in the Vernal and Roosevelt areas. The Mutual Self Help Housing program is administered by the Uintah Basin Association of Governments and applications are now being accepted. “We need 4 in Vernal and 4 in Roosevelt,” shares UBAOG representative Kendra Hackford.
Many locals are excited by the prospect of a new library in Roosevelt and all those with an interest in the possibility are urged to attend an upcoming public meeting. The Roosevelt Branch Library has consistently had record breaking participation in activities and reading programs each year led by Stephen Moon, who is the current Utah Librarian of the Year.
For those that know young local composer and musician Dante Zubel, the fact that he has once again won a state musical composition contest will be no surprise as they have come to expect as much this time each year.
Months of hot, dry weather will likely mean this fall’s general rifle buck deer hunt will be a lot tougher than usual as deer are less active. “Instead of moving,” shares DWR big game coordinator Covy Jones, “the deer bed down in the shade. They stop feeding earlier in the morning and they don’t leave their bedding areas to feed again until just before sundown. Because they’re not moving much, they’re tougher to find and hunt.”
The deer rifle hunt is just days away and the Division of Wildlife Resources is offering timely reminders for those heading to the mountains. The hunt opens October 20th and ends October 28th. Safety needs to be each hunters’ top priority. Remember to wear a minimum of 400 square inches of hunter orange on your head, chest, and back.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and TriCounty Health Department is spreading awareness of this public health problem and the resources available locally. Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, affects 1 in 3 Utah women during their lifetime. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels and is considered a major public health problem for young people as well as adults.
Roosevelt City has countered the allegations laid out in a lawsuit recently filed against the City and Police Department. Jerahmia Hardman had been charged with Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Child for an alleged incident in 2014 and which was dismissed in 2017 after an evidentiary hearing. Hardman filed the $7.5 million dollar civil lawsuit against Roosevelt City, Roosevelt Police Department, and Officers Pete Butcher and Tracy Bird in September.
