KNEU 1250It’s not news to Uintah Basin farmers and ranchers that Utah is experiencing severe drought conditions. What they may not know, however, is that Governor Herbert has now declared a ‘State of Emergency’ and there could be assistance available. An executive order was declared on Monday as a result of the Utah Drought Review and Reporting Committee’s recommendation.
Three juveniles are facing first degree felony charges in Uintah County for a September incident in which they allegedly broke into a home and held multiple people hostage at gunpoint. According to a KSL report, the group, made up of a 15, 16, and 17 year old, entered the home of the 16-year-old’s ex-girlfriend on September 21st with the intent of robbing the girl. Two of the teens were allegedly armed with firearms and one had a knife.
An armed man was taken into custody outside the Uintah County Library by Vernal City Police on Monday morning. According to Library Director Sam Passey, Vernal City Police and other agencies responded promptly and the man surrendered to police without incident. Vernal City Police issued a press release on the incident stating that officers responded to information received from a concerned citizen about an individual with a handgun and acting suspiciously.

It’s been a great school year so far at Discovery Elementary and among the positive happenings is the students working hard to be kind and thoughtful to those around them. Discovery Principal Tammy Christensen started the year off by visiting each classroom and reading the book ‘Have You Filled a Bucket Today?’ with the hope that students would begin to recognize that their actions are either helping others by filling buckets or hurting others by being a bucket dipper.
Election Day is November 6th and registered voters around the Uintah Basin should now have their ballots in hand. According to Duchesne County Clerk-Auditor Joann Evans, ballots in Duchesne County started being delivered on Saturday. There was a mail truck accident that has delayed some ballots but majority of voters should have ballots in hand by now.
A man who was charged with Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Child for an alleged incident in 2014 that was later dismissed in court is now suing Roosevelt City and Roosevelt City Police for $7.5 million dollars. The case against Jerahmia Hardman was one month away from a scheduled jury trial in early 2017 when it was indicated that a motion to dismiss would be filed due to discovery concerns.
The Rangely Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting all to their ‘Say NO on PROP 112 RALLY’ this week. The rally is being held Wednesday, October 17th, from 2 to 3pm at the Rangely Auto Museum, 128 South Stanolind Avenue.
A fatal crash occurred Sunday morning on Highway 40 near Currant Creek. According to Utah Highway Patrol, at about 7:54am, an uninvolved citizen was traveling eastbound on Highway 40 near milepost 56 when they noticed tire tracks in the snow that went off the westbound shoulder of the road.
Intermountain Catholic announced Friday that Saint James Catholic Church has welcomed a new priest. Father Anil Kumar Kakumanu, a native of India, is now ministering in Vernal. The Intermountain Catholic article says that Father Kakumanu began service as an alter boy and entered the seminary as soon as he could. “While there, he and other seminarians would go to outlying villages on the weekends to evangelize, sometimes bicycling 20 miles each way for their ministry.” He was ordained a priest in 2012. He was recommended for this new assignment by Father Kalva, the administrator over St. James, who had known Father Kakumanu previously. Father Kakumanu arrived in Salt Lake City on July 26th. He speaks English, Spanish, Telugu, and Hindu.
Saturday was opening night for the 10 nights of fear at the Hotel Vernal Haunt and Ghost Tours. ‘Hotel Vernal’ opened in 1947 on east Main Street in Vernal and was ‘the place to be’ for decades. Now known as the Weston Lamplighter Inn, the rooms of the Hotel Vernal have been empty since 1991 with ghost stories swirling ever since.
