For the 23rd year, 7-Eleven is working with law agencies to distribute free Slurpee drink coupons to kids as part of the Operation Chill community-service program.
A new company is reviving curbside recycling in the Vernal area. Recyclops owner Ryan Smith made a presentation on his curbside recycling company during Tuesday’s Vernal Chamber luncheon. Recyclops got started 5 years ago in the Provo Orem area and began looking into expanding to the Vernal area last fall. “We did some research and learned that Vernal was the first city in the state to have a residential recycling program,” shared Smith.
The annual Flaming Gorge Fish Derby is coming up and not an event to be missed. This is one of the largest freshwater fishing derbies in the USA with up to 400 teams competing in multiple categories.
Vernal Theatre: LIVE is being recognized on a growing stage. The theatre has been named the ‘Community Revitalizing Business of the Year’ by the Small Business Administration. Ian Lorenzana, Economic Development Specialist at the SBA Utah District Office, selected Vernal Theatre: LIVE for this award and was able to attend a showing of The Secret Garden at the theatre last week.
The Uintah County Commission agenda included an Ordinance during Monday’s Commission meeting that will help pave the way for an upgrader in Uintah County. The Ordinance amends a use in the I-2 Industrial Zone, changing oil refineries from a Conditional Use to a Permitted Use.
The Office of the Utah Attorney General provided an update on the restitution order the state is seeking against former Utah Highway Patrol trooper Rex Olsen in the Maeser Highway Fire case. The state is requesting a restitution order in the amount of $482,392.76.

The Downtown Revitalization Committee is inviting any and all to participate in the second annual downtown Vernal clean up day coming up next week. The plan is to help beautify downtown to make it a great place to visit during the Dinah-Soar days scheduled the next weekend.

Drug Take Back events give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by giving citizens the chance to safely dispose of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
The Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce is being recognized this week by Team Uintah for their support of public schools. “Whenever there is a need in one of our schools, the Chamber and its leaders will find a way to help,” shares Team Uintah. “Chamber representatives are an incredible resource for the district’s new employees, showing them the amazing things this great community has to offer.”
Two students of Moffat County High School were foiled in their plans to perform a school shooting on Friday, April 20th, on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting. On Wednesday, April 18th, the Principal of Moffat County High School learned of the shooting plans through an email which set in motion the school district’s safety plan.
The Utah State Republican Convention was held on Saturday in Salt Lake City. The Senate District 26 race came down to the two Uintah Basin candidates, Ron Winterton and Brian Gorum with Gorum taking the majority in the final vote.
Former UHP trooper Rex Olsen was sentenced last week in 8th District Court for starting the Maeser Highway Fire last June. Olsen was sentenced to serve 180 days in the Uintah County Jail and will be placed on probation for 36 months.
