KNEU 1250Graduates, family members, instructors, and administrators from the Uintah Basin Applied Technology College filled the Uintah Conference Centeron Wednesday for the 2017 graduation ceremony. There were over 450 graduates and the place was packed, shares UBATC representative Stephanie Carter.
Visitors from all over the world will visit the area to see Dinosaur National Monument this vacation season and staff of Dinosaur National Monument will be doing their part to make sure travelers keep safety as a priority.
Residents of a senior living complex are making their concerns known about a neighboring business. The elderly residents of Daniels Crossing presented to the Uintah County Commission last week claiming that residents are experiencing health effects due to the presence of the pet crematorium located next door.
An application to modify apartments to single family dwellings will continue forward in Uintah County though the Commission is split. The Lone Tree Sky Park apartments, located at 1379 South 570 East, would need a variance on the road access to be acceptable. The access for apartments required a 24 foot wide access and they met requirements for apartments, explains County Planner Matt Cazier, but in changing over to townhomes, the code states that private roads need to meet the same standard as public roads, which is 36 feet wide.
Tough conditions for the deer population means fewer hunters will be granted permits next fall. The Utah Wildlife Board listened to presentations from DWR biologists before making the decision to grant 1,625 less buck deer hunting permits for the 2017 hunt, citing drought conditions and this year’s tough winter.
Spring and summer fun are heating up making boating and fishing a likely activity. The Daggett County LEPC, Emergency Preparedness Committee, is advising caution for anyone recreating on the Green River. “The river is flowing fast and high, making it complicated to canoes and kayaks and challenging to rafters,” shares the LEPC.
Governor Herbert’s 6th annual Utah Energy Development Summit is kicking off today and this year’s theme is the “Crossroads of Innovation.” Local leaders of industry are attending the conference as a recovery of the oil and gas industry in the Uintah Basin is the hope of many. This year’s conference will focus on Utah’s sustainable energy future. “The state of Utah is proud to be a vital partner in promoting meaningful dialogue and public-private partnerships which lead to responsible, economically smart energy development,” shares Governor Herbert. “Now in its sixth year, the summit continues to promote pioneering solutions to some of our most immediate challenges, and these solutions may power our future communities with affordable and reliable energy in the years to come.”
As the process of acquiring funding for the Stonegate sewer project has extended beyond a year, construction costs have gone up.
Uintah County, Vernal City and Naples City are working together to address an irrigation ditch along 500 South that is putting the airport fence in danger. According to Uintah County Commissioner Duane Shepherd, the issue runs on the south side of the road from 500 East to about 1200 East which covers ground owned by each entity.
Time will tell how bills from the 2017 Utah Legislative Session will affect the Uintah Basin. As Chief Sponsor of SJR-14, a joint resolution regarding jobs in rural Utah, Senator Kevin Van Tassell says business expansion and development will be encouraged in rural Utah, striving to create 25,000 new jobs over the next four years.
Local farmers are already hard at work and TriCounty Health Department encourages local support.
House Representative Scott Chew and Senator Kevin Van Tassell presented at the Vernal Area Chamber luncheon on Tuesday. Among the updates was a review given by Representative Chew explaining which legislation will affect education into the future.
