KNEU 1250A Craig man is behind bars in a case of attempted murder and arson. According to the Craig Police Department, officers were dispatched to 925 West 1st Street on Thursday, June 21st, at approximately 4:02pm on a call of assault. “The reporting party stated that her nephew attempted to kill her,” shares Craig Police.
Despite some hiccups, Primary Election ballots made it into the hands of voters over the last week. Ballots must be postmarked by today, June 25th, to be counted in the election. If you’re at all concerned about your ballot receiving a postmark in time today, ballots can be hand delivered to voting locations and must be delivered by 8:00pm on Tuesday.
Fire danger continues to be high. Officials remind recreators that propane stoves can be used by dispersed campers as an alternative to campfires to reduce the risk of sparking a wildfire and to remember to have a bucket and shovel with you, as you cut your firewood this summer.
Roosevelt City continues to explore economic development options. During the June 19th Roosevelt City Council meeting, economic growth was a major theme of discussion. “The council heard several presentations from agencies who work with municipalities to secure federal grant dollars and funding for community redevelopment,” shares the Roosevelt Bulletin.
The Roosevelt Fire Department is urging extreme caution with fireworks this year. They have provided a map posted on the Roosevelt City Facebook page that shows the high risk areas within Roosevelt City and is asking that no fireworks be used in any of the Red section of the map. Yellow areas are also considered high risk and green areas may also be dangerous. The state of Utah allows fireworks to go on sale on June 24th and citizens are allowed to light them on July 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th from 11am to 11pm. The exception is on the 4th of July, fireworks can be set off until midnight. In celebration of Pioneer Day, fireworks are allowed on July 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 25th with the exception of July 24th until midnight. “To reduce the risk of fire,” shares Roosevelt Fire Department, “make sure that you only light fireworks near wet grass or pavement. Do not light fireworks near any dry, open field…While it is legal to light fireworks this summer, it is considered a very high risk.” All that choose to use fireworks are urged to use caution.
The Division of Wildlife Resources has once again teamed up with 98.5 The Fox for the annual ‘Fishing with the Fox’ tagged fishing contest. From now until August 15th, anglers can fish at three designated bodies of water with a chance of catching a tagged fish. “Fishing with the Fox is in its 8th year and is a great way to encourage the public to get out to local Basin-waters and go fishing,” shares DWR Conservation Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby.
Superintendent Mark Dockins addressed concerns over capital projects currently underway at Uintah High School during Tuesday’s Uintah School Board meeting. “Five years ago, when we remodeled the high school, the plans called for a full renovation of the auditorium and an overhaul of the baseball, softball and soccer fields,” Dockins said.
Duchesne County Economic Development is inviting anyone interested to attend a round table discussion coming up in Roosevelt with World Trade Center Utah. “Duchesne County Economic Development is so excited to partner with the World Trade Center Utah to bring their expertise to our community for a round table discussion,” shares Duchesne County Economic Development Director Irene Hansen.
The Department of Workforce Services released updated county unemployment numbers this week and very little has changed in northeastern Utah. Daggett County reported 4.5 percent unemployment for the second month in a row. Duchesne County stayed at 4.3 percent while Uintah County ticked slightly down from 4.6 to 4.5 percent. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the State of Utah dropped a tenth of a percent from April to May landing at 3 percent, meaning about 48,100 Utahns were counted as unemployed and actively seeking work. Nationally, unemployment also dropped a tenth of a percent to 3.8 percent.
The Uintah School Board met Tuesday night and approved the 2018-2019 Fiscal Budget. The $82.1 million dollar budget was approved in a 4 to 1 vote. According to a release from the Uintah School District, $58.6 million dollars of that is for the operations and maintenance fund which includes employee salaries.
Miraculously no lives were lost in a serious accident on Highway 40 near the Colorado border on Wednesday evening. According to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Todd Royce, an accident occurred about 10 miles west of the state line at approximately 5:37pm when a pickup truck crossed the center line and hit an oncoming semi head on.
Yes, many motions were made and failed. Yes, frustrations ran high and many struggled to understand how they can pay a higher property tax rate with the county walking away with less money. In the end, Wednesday’s special Uintah County Commission meeting accomplished, after three grueling hours, what it set out to accomplish: the approval of a tax rate before the State Tax Commission takes over the matter following the June 22nd deadline.
