KNEU 1250Conducting an election by mail is typically uneventful in the weeks leading up to the election day but this year is the exception to the rule. Uintah County Clerk Auditor Mike Wilkins provided an update on Thursday regarding the ballot debacle as local voters are still waiting to have ballots in hand.
Delays and errors to a portion of local ballots are part of a bigger problem that stretches beyond the Uintah Basin. According to Duchesne County Clerk Auditor JoAnn Evans, several Utah counties are having issues with the same printing facility. “This is not just a Duchesne County problem,” explains Evans.

The Bureau of Land Management Utah quarterly oil and gas lease sale resulted in competitive bids for 11 parcels of land. The highest total bid per acre was $30 dollars submitted by Bro Energy LLC. of Salt Lake City for parcel 41 in the Vernal Field office area. The highest total bid per parcel was $41,800 dollars submitted by Wapiti Rocky Mountain LLC of Texas for parcel 33, also located in the Vernal field office area. The entire sale net nearly $186, 617 dollars.
Black bears often live in the same areas that we camp and hike posing obvious safety concerns for both humans and bears. Sloppy campers and hikers don’t just endanger themselves, shares the Division of Wildlife Resources, but also future visitors. When hiking, stay alert and in large groups, make noise, stay away from animal carcasses, store scented items in airtight plastic bags, keep kids in the center of the group, and NEVER approach or feed a wild bear under any circumstance.
As efforts continue to see federal habitat conservation efforts aligned with state wildlife management plans, a meeting is coming up this month in Vernal to answer questions regarding recently released draft amendments to the sage grouse plans from 2015. The amendments were published on May 4th and are in the middle of a 90-day public comment period that ends August 2nd.
Wildfire danger is nothing to take lightly as dry conditions exist throughout the region. Ashley National Forest reports that the dry conditions in the forest are moving towards historic highs, leading to increased wildfire danger.

A massive plume of smoke in Bluebell could be seen for miles and miles on Tuesday. According the the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, the smoke came from a large fire burning at an RNI facility on Bluebell Highway northwest of Roosevelt. Originally it was reported that three storage tanks were burning; two of condensate and one of crude oil.
The Uintah School District active shooter training included some special speakers who know first hand how devastating a real active shooter situation is. “Those who participated in the training had the privilege of hearing from four survivors of the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School,” shares the school district.
A printing error has caused a delay for some Duchesne County residents as they wait for a correct ballot to come in the mail. The state House District 69 race between Christine Watkins and Jae Potter was not included on the ballots that was sent out to voters in 10 Roosevelt precincts thanks to a problem at the printing facility.
Uintah County is letting voters know of a possible delay in the deliver of the June Primary ballots. According to the announcement, the Vernal Post Office had still not received the ballots as of Monday afternoon.
