KNEU 1250Students from the middle schools across the Uintah School District truly represented the Basin well at the state science fair. The students received a combined 37 awards/recognitions as they competed at the Ritchey State Science and Engineering Fair at Weber State University. There was twenty-two Honorable Mentions and six Excellent Mentions.
The state of Utah has had a reminder that it is prone to some serious seismic activity and Uintah County Human Resources is reminding the public of an annual event that can help prepare for the unexpected. The Great Utah ShakeOut will be Thursday, April 18th, and all are welcome to join Uintah County employees and people throughout Utah at 10:15am by practicing earthquake safety wherever you may be.
If you haven’t done a good deed yet today here’s a simple and quick way to make a real difference for a local teacher. Uintah High School teacher Rachelle Durrant was nominated last month by a student for the NCL ‘Giving JOY’ competition which will provide fantastic prizes for the top 30 nominees in the United States and Canada. As of Sunday night, Mrs. Durrant is in the number 31 spot and needs more votes to move up the ladder! Rachelle is well known and loved by her students, both current and former.
Charges have been filed against the mother of the toddler boy who died in a house fire on Christmas Eve in Craig. According to a report from the Craig Daily Press, 26-year-old Vanessa Jenkins was arrested on April 3rd on the charge of Child Abuse Negligently Causing Death. According to the arrest warrant affidavit shared in the article, police responded to the home at 10:30am on Christmas Eve to find Jenkins outside the home yelling that her child was still inside.
The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release on Sunday of a critical incident that took place at about 2am that day. According to the release, two sheriff’s deputies and two Roosevelt police officers responded to a call of domestic violence at a home near 500 East and 5000 South in Roosevelt where they were told the suspect had a gun.
As the Uintah Basin struggles to find a balance to its economy, it still can make residents wince when the oil and gas industry is painted in a negative light. Well, according to an article from KSL, advocates for clean air and members of the extraction industry have been working together to help address air pollution, especially the wintertime ozone problem. Throughout last winter, the oil and gas industry companies voluntarily completed a checklist of “to do” procedures for reducing emissions.
Eric Funk has come a long way since his days at USU Uintah Basin earning his associates degree and then pharmacy prerequisites. He attended pharmacy school in Las Vegas and now today has a successful career as a nuclear pharmacist at PETNET Solutions Inc. “We take a radioactive isotope and attach it to a drug that is specific to the area of the body or disease we want to see,” explains Funk.
UBTech presented this week at the Vernal Chamber luncheon on their successful well simulation program. Well Control Instructor Roy Arocho made the presentation, explaining that the program draws students from around the world. Well Control is the technique used in oil and gas operations to maintain a column of fluid and prevent uncontrolled releases of oil, gas, or formation fluids from a well.
Roosevelt City received notice on Tuesday, April 2nd that they were awarded over $200,000 by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to improve 500 East between Lagoon Street and 800 South. Receiving the funds from CDBG is quite an ordeal as it takes a great deal of labor to process and has very strict requirements.
Vernal City Council has agreed to move forward with a program to replace old water meters after it was discovered that many were failing. “We are experiencing water loss in our system above what is expected,” explains Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion. “We tested 8 older meters and 7 of them failed.” It was during a work session in February that the topic of reducing water loss was discussed and it was decided to send the older meters to USU for the testing that revealed the failure rate.
The Uintah Basin is proud to be sending students off to Future Business Leaders of America Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, this summer. The FBLA program serves to teach high school students about the workforce and the many aspects that go into the world of business, including graphic design, leadership, and communication skills. These students learn to develop marketable skills for the changing world.
The spring weather is bringing people back outdoors. Everyone busily rushing to and fro on foot, as well as in vehicles. The Utah Department of Public Safety wants to remind pedestrians and motorists of their obligations and responsibilities of keeping each other safe. Motorists should not be operating a vehicle within 3 feet of a pedestrian so yield at all stop/yield signs and stop when exiting a driveway or alley before crossing any sidewalk area. Be sure to give way to all pedestrians and any other traffic on the sidewalk. Also drivers, never pass another vehicle that is stopped or yielding to a pedestrian. Pedestrians must give vehicles right of way when crossing outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Jaywalking is defined as crossing at any point other than a marked crosswalk if you are between two adjacent intersections with traffic lights. Don’t cross an intersection diagonally unless there is a specific signal for it, obey the railroad crossing warnings, and yield to emergency vehicles.
