The weather held out for a great day of fishing on Saturday for the Flaming Gorge Fish Derby. The annual Flaming Gorge Fish Derby is one of the largest freshwater fishing derbies in the USA with up to 400 teams each year competing in multiple categories.
Local high school students had a fantastic day of learning at the first Earth Observation and GIS day hosted by USU-Uintah Basin. “We appreciate the Quinney College of Natural Resources and the Utah Geographic Information Council for supporting youth outreach in our community,” shares USU-Uintah Basin Executive Director James Taylor.

Many breathed a sigh of relief at the announcement on Thursday that Bradley Moore, the man wanted for a shooting in Fort Duchesne, was found and in police custody. Perhaps no one was quite so relieved as the staff and students at Eagle View Elementary who had spent multiple school days at varying levels of lockdown during the massive manhunt.

A group of Roosevelt Junior High School students made an emotional presentation to their school’s Community Council this week, asking for changes to the school dress code. The group, made primarily of 8th graders, held a silent peaceful protest on Monday morning to bring attention to issues they see with the dress code after they say a student was not allowed to take the Sage Test because the pants she was wearing were the popular distressed style.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah announced this week that they have filed a lawsuit on behalf of two former Daggett County Jail inmates that were subject to abuse while incarcerated. The Plaintiffs are listed as Dustin Porter and Steven Drollette who are seeking, quote, “damages and injunctive relief for a pattern of severe cruelty against them while they were incarcerated at the Daggett County Jail.”
Utah has three mandatory quagga mussel inspection stations, one of which is a major roadway in and out of the Uintah Basin. If you’re transporting any watercraft, including boats, Jet Skis, Wave Runners, canoes, kayaks, or float tubes, you are required to stop at the station.
The Uintah High School track team, as well as many others, are celebrating a fantastic accomplishment of four of their teammates. You might assume high school seniors Kyler Lawson, Kyle Henderson, Brandon Slaugh, and Payton Pace have been running together for several years but that just isn’t the case.
