Uintah County Library has provided a platform for young, aspiring artists to share their work. The Artist in the Making program has been a hit since its inception and a new round of young art submissions are being sought.

UBATC Instructor Keeps the Art of Blacksmithing Alive
Blacksmithing is a lost art in much of the world but thanks to a UBATC instructor, that’s not the case in the Uintah Basin. Gerald Cooper first began blacksmithing 15 years ago and at that time was one of three blacksmiths in the Uintah Basin.

Duchesne County Man Charged with Forcible Sodomy
A Duchesne County man is charged in 8th District Court with two counts of 1st Degree Forcible Sodomy. The charging document states that the crime committed by 53-year-old Relonzo Mark Duane occurred on or about July 10th, 2015, and that the act was without consent with a person 14 years of age or older.
Election Ballots Arriving Around the Basin
Most folks around the Basin have received their election ballots in the mail and if you weren’t yet registered to vote, it’s not too late. The deadline to register to vote is November 1st and can be done physically at the county clerk’s office or by visiting www.vote.utah.gov.
TriCounty Hosting Manila Flu Shoot-Out
TriCounty Health Department continues to urge community members to get the flu shot and are providing Daggett County with their own flu shoot-out event. Every year the flu contributes to the death of 3,300 to 49,000 individuals, depending on the severity of the season.
Prized Big Game Permits
It’s already time to be thinking about 2017 big game hunting permits. The Division of Wildlife Resources says starting October 26th, hunters can begin applying for next year’s most prized Utah big game permits.
Community to Remember Fallen Officer Kevin Orr
On November 22nd, 2006, a Detective for the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office lost his life while on a Search and Rescue mission. 34-year-old Detective Kevin Orr was coordinating the search for a missing woman from a helicopter when the aircraft struck a power cable near the town of Jensen.
State School Board District 12 Candidates
Candidates for the State School Board District 12 race spoke at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday. Local incumbent of 14 years Dixie Lee Allen and candidate Alisa Ellis of Heber took on hot topics from common core to testing in schools.
Maesar Fire Substation to Move Forward
A project that could save residents money while increasing public safety is moving forward. According to Uintah County Commissioner Bill Stringer, the Maesar fire substation project can proceed now that funding has been arranged.
Duchesne County Weighs in on Yellowstone Feeder Canal Repair Project
The Duchesne County Commission is weighing in on the Yellowstone Feeder Canal repair project proposed by the Moon Lake Water Users Association. In a letter signed on Monday and addressing the Bureau of Reclamation office in Provo, the Commissioners state their support of “lining segments of the deteriorated concrete canal (and an earthen embankment section) with a geomembrane liner, covered with at least three inches of shotcrete or concrete.”
Safety Urged as Deer Hunt Approaches
With a fantastic deer hunt anticipated, wildlife offices are reminding hunters to put safety as the top priority. Statistically, Utah is considered a safe place for hunting, shares DWR Conservation Outreach Officer Bryan Clyde, but there is always room for improvement.
