KNEU 1250Spring is here and that means that Outlaw Trail Theater is preparing for their summer musical. This year the theater is presenting the musical comedy The Pirates of Penzance which will be directed by an Outlaw Trail newcomer with a nostalgic connection to the show. “I’m so excited to participate with the Outlaw Trail Theater production of The Pirates of Penzance,” shares Jen Curtis, this year’s director.
The Division of Wildlife Resources is seeking information on a poaching incident that took place in February in Uintah County. According to the DWR news release, conservation offices were dispatched to a location east of Jensen where two buck pronghorn had been killed and left to waste.
How often can it be said that people can serve their community by helping with hot air balloons? Well now you can by volunteering for the Dinah “Soar” Days and Hot Air Balloon Festival. The festival is looking for volunteers to work on crews of the pilots to help get the balloons into the air.
Uintah County is working to amend their employee ‘alcohol and drug free workplace’ policy taking into account the Utah medical marijuana law change. During the Uintah County Commission meeting on Monday, amendments to Policy 520 were discussed.
The Utah Department of Workforce Services released the latest unemployment numbers by Utah counties. Daggett County shifted up slightly from 4.7 to 4.8 percent.
The 2019 UDOT construction list has projects planned for Daggett, Uintah, and Duchesne County. Daggett County work includes crews removing and replacing 10 miles of asphalt on SR-43 and a Dutch John chip seal project on US-191. In Duchesne County, UDOT will install erosion control measures to redirect the flow of the Duchesne River away from SR-35 at MP 54.
Another Uintah Basin recreation authority is calling out vandals and asking locals to respect facilities. Starvation State Park has shared photos online of shot up buildings and signs. The park originally warned that if the vandalism continues, they will have to start closing off portions of the park including Knight Hollow, Juniper Point, and Indian Bay.
The Union High Drama Department has proven they are a force to be reckoned with. Last November, the department’s presentation of Newsies had audience members coming back for a second and third time. It was the first drama production in the new Union High School’s state-of-the-art auditorium and it was a match for the impressive venue.
With hardly enough time for the ink to dry, a lawsuit has been filed over the Green River Water Rights Exchange contract between the Bureau of Reclamation and the state of Utah. A team of environmental groups oppose the contract which will allow for an exchange of Green River water rights for water to be released from Flaming Gorge Dam.
Officials from the state of Utah and Bureau of Reclamation signed a contract last week which finalizes the Green River Water Rights Exchange agreement. According to a press release from the Bureau of Reclamation, the terms of the contract are that “the state agrees to forbear its right to deplete water from the Green River and its tributaries, enabling Reclamation to meet Endangered Species Act flow requirements. In exchange, the state of Utah will receive an equal amount of water released from Flaming Gorge Dam. The contract provides assistance in meeting flow and temperature requirements for the recovery of endangered fish, and allows Reclamation to continue operations in compliance with the 2006 Record of Decision.” Negotiations on the contract were complete in 2018 and the Reclamation recently announced that a Finding of No Significant Impact was the result of the latest National Environmental Policy Act review. “This water exchange contract represents a successful and productive partnership between the State of Utah and the federal government, a partnership aimed at providing maximum value from available water resources,” shares Brent Rhees, the Bureau’s Upper Colorado Regional Director. The contract between the Bureau of Reclamation and the state of Utah is meant to help avoid the need for expensive new water storage facilities by using an already available water source. The first day of spring was March 20th and with its arrival are some issues to be aware of. Spring brings run off from melting snow and since our snowpack has been on the cusp of record breaking then we will have plenty. Utah Division of Emergency Management spokesperson Joe Dougherty is warning those that live below a burn scar area, like the Dollar Ridge Fire burn scar, to be vigilant in paying attention to the weather and conditions.

Uintah Basin Technical College is holding a unique workshop called “Experience Mind Optimization”. This 6-hour experience is about transforming our results by quieting the mental noise. Mario Lopez will share his proven training methods to facilitate change through hearing, seeing, writing and doing to enable individuals to solve internal conflict and connect and quiet outside distractions. The event is on Thursday, March 28th, at the Vernal UBTech from 9am – 4pm. The workshop is $75 per person and includes a lunch.
