KNEU 1250The City of Roosevelt is wanting the feedback of its residents to help plan for the future. To prepare a course of growth and expansion as well as maintain its infrastructure, the city is going through the process of updating their master plans that will guide the direction of the city for the next 15 to 20 years.
UBTech is the recipient of yet another generous donation, this time to upgrade their Health Simulation Education Center. UBTech announced in a recent press release that mid-stream gas company Andeavor Logistics has made a $40,000 dollar gift to the school that will be used to purchase simulation equipment to give students hands-on practice in both emergency and non-emergency medically-related situations.
As the Uintah Basin fluxes with a boom or bust economy innovation is needed to stabilize the economy in those bust states. Recently the Vernal Chamber of Commerce held their weekly luncheon at the facility of a local company looking to create such innovation. The company is Dragon Shale, LLC. Currently in the oil production process, kerogen oil, which is rich in certain chemicals valued in petrochemical and related industries, is destroyed in the process of making fuels.
Any person diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes knows how it can be a life changing struggle. It brings on a list of changes that alter the life of not only the diagnosed but the lives of their family and caregiver. For those that are feeling alone you need not be.
For all those in the Basin with inclinations toward poetry there is a great opportunity for you. Utah Life Magazine is looking for poetry throughout the year and from all parts of the state, including the Uintah Basin. The magazine has a theme every two months based on a central theme. The theme for July/August is “Independence”. If interested, there is no limitations to style and length of poems. Individuals are allowed to submit as many poems as desired but they need to be in by May 1, 2019. Poems need to submitted through a poetry submission form at www.UtahLifeMag.com. Poems need to be in a Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF file format.
Every city benefits when the community has outlets in the form of arts, parks, and recreation. For Roosevelt City, the community has expressed a desire, according to Mayor JR Bird, “to have some type of entity formed that could help organize, expand and enhance the recreation and arts of our City.”
Students from Con Amore School were able to participate recently in the Exceptional Rodeo, an event in its fifth year that provides an opportunity for children with disabilities to participate in rodeo events and games. Con Amore School (which is Italian for “With Love”) specializes in providing education for students with disabilities. Delsco Northwest sponsored the rodeo with Chad Richard donating his A & C Racing and Roping Arena to hold the event in.
It was a successful day of competition for Uintah High School Sterling Scholars at the Northeast Region Competition held in Orem on Monday. The event took place at Utah Valley University and the Utes came away from the competition with two winners and eight runner-ups. Social Sciences representative Liberty Bennion and Science representative Emily Despain were each awarded the title of Region Sterling Scholar in their category. The eight runner-ups from Uintah were Hayden Boren in Skilled and Technical Sciences, Rylie Dutson in English, Jackson Gardiner in Agricultural Sciences, Jera Haslem in Speech/Theater Arts/Forensics, Caleb Hunt in the General category, Bowde Mold in Family and Consumer Sciences, Whitney Walk in Mathematics, and KarLee Zager in World Languages. Pictures shared online of a structure fire in Duchesne County last week help show the intensity of what fire crews respond to. The Duchesne Volunteer Fire Department shared the images from Paul Spencer and Rick Hopkins on Sunday showing a blaze that took place last Tuesday.
Charges have been filed against the individual arrested in connection with an FBI operation in Uintah County on Thursday. Court records show that 50-year-old David Antillon of Vernal has been charged in 8th District Court with 1st Degree Felony Distribution of a Controlled Substance and Misdemeanor Manufacturing/Delivering of Drug Paraphernalia.
Plans continue to move forward on a project that hopes to eliminate flooding events in downtown Vernal. The Vernal City Council approved a cooperative agreement with UDOT to begin design on the project during their Council meeting. They also approved moving forward with a $200,000 loan for Vernal City’s match for the project. UDOT committed almost half of the $2.6 million to update the downtown storm system and address flooding on Main Street.
It’s time again for a unique annual favorite night out for many local families and this year brings a special treat. Lori Olmstead, the founder of the VernalUTAH Storytelling Festival, will be traveling from her home in Tennessee to serve as one of the event’s performers during the annual event being held this week. Olmstead was living in Vernal when she and a group of dedicated volunteers launched the festival in 2003 with the goal of bringing world-renowned talent to the Uintah Basin.
